For a while Courtney Pine appeared as if he were going to be
the next Wynton Marsalis. While Marsalis in the mid-'80s was doing
close impressions of mid-'60s Miles Davis, Pine's impressive
playing was nearly identical to John Coltrane's of the same era.
Since then Pine has received less publicity (at least in the U.S.)
and his importance has diminished a bit. He played with reggae and
funk bands while in school and has always had a strong interest
in several forms of music outside of jazz. He played with John Stevens
in the early '80s, formed the Jazz Warriors (an open-minded big band)
a few years later and started leading his own small groups.
In 1986 he toured with George Russell's Orchestra and sat in with
Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers but since then, despite some fine records
for Antilles, Pine's career has seemed a bit directionless.

This early Courtney Pine recording (the tenor-saxophonist was 22 at the time),
features some of the most promising Black English jazz musicians of the time
including Pine (who also plays some bass clarinet and soprano), singer
Cleveland Watkiss (who often is reminiscent of Bobby McFerrin), vibraphonist
Orphy Robinson and pianist Julian Joseph.

Yes, it is. We wanted to create something fresh for the upcoming
summer, and here it is. The concept was created to our mid-90┤s club
festival a couple of weeks ago, and people seemed to like it. And
FuFFENS like those who like FuFFENS.

We are looking for quality sites in Europe and US, to be afilliated
on. Remember, we┤re not in it for the creds, but for the spreading
of quality music - we just want to get our releases out to the ppl
that wants/needs it. More pre sites fills this purpose.
