    ██▌▄▀█     The chief innovation of Detroit techno second-waver       ░██▌▄▀
    ██▌▄▀█     Jeff Mills was to abandon the narrative and melody        ░██▌▄▀
    ██▌▄▀█     for which his city was known and replace it with a        ░██▌▄▀
    ██▌▄▀█     relentless, almost undifferentiated flow of rhythm.       ░██▌▄▀
    ██▌▄▀█     This trend in his work reached its apotheosis on his      ░██▌▄▀
    ██▌▄▀█     Purposemaker imprint. The label's "DJ tools" -            ░██▌▄▀
    ██▌▄▀█     compiled here, along with a few new compositions -        ░██▌▄▀
    ██▌▄▀█     take the frantic energy of the producer's earlier         ░██▌▄▀
    ██▌▄▀█     records and hone it into a relentless, almost             ░██▌▄▀
    ██▌▄▀█     abstract funk. In short, "Purposemaker Compilation"       ░██▌▄▀
    ██▌▄▀█     offers body music for the head.                           ░██▌▄▀
    ██▌▄▀█                                                               ░██▌▄▀
    ██▌▄▀█     So how does such high-impact stuff work on your           ░██▌▄▀
    ██▌▄▀█     headphones or bedroom stereo? In some cases, it           ░██▌▄▀
    ██▌▄▀█     translates surprisingly well. The insistent synth         ░██▌▄▀
    ██▌▄▀█     signature of "The Bells" will trigger an instant          ░██▌▄▀
    ██▌▄▀█     party memory if you've been to any mid-'90s techno        ░██▌▄▀
    ██▌▄▀█     event; Mills deploys his hook only in the middle          ░██▌▄▀
    ██▌▄▀█     third, though, bookending it with two distinct and        ░██▌▄▀
    ██▌▄▀█     equally mesmerizing rhythm swampiness that are the        ░██▌▄▀
    ██▌▄▀█     real heart of the track. Another crowd-pleaser,           ░██▌▄▀
    ██▌▄▀█     "Alarms," worms its way into your subconscious with a     ░██▌▄▀
    ██▌▄▀█     brief oscillator riff that's closer to Omni Trio's        ░██▌▄▀
    ██▌▄▀█     avant-garde melody fragments than the cartoony riffs      ░██▌▄▀
    ██▌▄▀█     usually associated with rave music.                       ░██▌▄▀
    ██▌▄▀█                                                               ░██▌▄▀
    ██▌▄▀█     Most of the other compositions, though, eschew even       ░██▌▄▀
    ██▌▄▀█     that level of catchiness, instead relying on the ebb      ░██▌▄▀
    ██▌▄▀█     and flow of layered rhythm to create an impression.       ░██▌▄▀
    ██▌▄▀█     "Outsiders" and "Paradise" both sound like old-school     ░██▌▄▀
    ██▌▄▀█     Chicago house tracks pitched up to +8 and skipping        ░██▌▄▀
    ██▌▄▀█     repeatedly. "Masterplan" and "Captivate" are as           ░██▌▄▀
    ██▌▄▀█     mesmerizing as good, hard trance, but even without        ░██▌▄▀
    ██▌▄▀█     that genre's Euro funklessness they verge on sounding     ░██▌▄▀
    ██▌▄▀█     flat. The spacey synth stabs and looped keyboard riff     ░██▌▄▀
    ██▌▄▀█     in the middle of "Medicine Man" suggest early Prince      ░██▌▄▀
    ██▌▄▀█     remixed by The Surgeon. The Latin-tinged syncopation      ░██▌▄▀
    ██▌▄▀█     of "Fuzz Dance" and "Tango," meanwhile, proves that       ░██▌▄▀
    ██▌▄▀█     the po-faced Mills can be sexy and fun in his own         ░██▌▄▀
    ██▌▄▀█     robotic way.                                              ░██▌▄▀
