Coming from the same city as the Kaiser Chiefs, David Thomas
Broughton couldn't provide a more distinct juxtaposition of
styles with the Leeds winkle-pickers if he tried. Where they
revel in crass Britpop sloganeering, Broughton is all about the
slow-burn; coaxing melodies and oddly gorgeous vocals from a
shuffling music box of acoustic guitars, looping pedals and
bargain-bin drum machines. The result is (predictably) tooth-
achingly gorgeous. Recorded in a single take at Wrangthorn
Church (Hyde Park, Leeds), Broughton has been unceremoniously
dumped into the 'freak-folk' enclosure and in doing so shows up
the meagre offerings traditionally proffered under this soft-
centered appellation. Taking handsome dollops of Nick Drake,
John Fahey, Antony of the Johnsons and Neutral Milk Hotel,
Broughoton's quixotic touch is writ large above all the pieces
contained within 'The Complete Guide to Insufficiency' -
instilling a fabulously dream-like quality to proceedings.
Opening with 'Ambiguity', Broughton leads us in through some
tip-toeing guitar loops that gradually unfurl into a pink-hued
vocal that recalls Antony and the Johnson's in its stark, alien
delivery, albeit shorn of the overly operatic tendencies,
whilst he laments "it's easy to forget where you came from if
there's no question of your return...'. Similarly, both
'Execution' and 'Walking Over You' are fantastically
accomplished whilst coming across as appealingly naive,
representing that fabled song-writing territory where the
innovative does not overshadow the enjoyable - but instead
coexists. Or something. Either way it's a lovely album
(dedicated to John Peel) which will likely suit all seasons and
enhance a buoyant mood as much as it consoles a dour one. A
Revelation.
