Release number two on Jef Cantu (Tarentel)'s new label.
Members of Tarentel, Tussle, and Troll drink green tea and go
grubbing for food in the crack allies of San Francisco's
Mission District. 3 tracks of shakers, bells, drones,
percussion ruckus, guitars, voice, and clarinet in just under
40 minutes. Hand made covers in an edition of 100.

From the looks of the felt pen scrawled disc artwork you might
be expecting some Wolf Eyes, Black Dice or Lightning Bolt
sweaty dirge-noise bursts, but The Alps go in the opposite
direction, offering up glistening meditative soundscapes well-
suited to gazing at frosty mountain peaks such as those of
their namesake. Makes more sense when you discover that The
Alps are Scott Hewicker (Troll), Alexis Georgopoulos (Tussle)
and Jefre Cantu (Tarentel, Colophon, J.C. Ledesma), doesn't it?
Squeaky clarinets and alien flute toots melted into whirls of
swish and whoosh, all laid over ominous drones and instrument
hum and tape hiss. Quite beautiful. And as with many cd-r
     releases, quite limited!

I'll be the first to admit that over the years, Tarentel has
been a band that never did a whole lot for me. While they
weren't bad by any means, I was just never bowled over like I
wanted to be. No harm, no foul. So when the package from
Tarentel mainman, Jefre Cantu-Ledesma's Root Strata imprint
showed up in my PO box, I wasn't sure what to expect. Things
were looking up, though, as soon as I saw the stunning handmade
packages all these releases come in. And then a quick glance at
the instrumentation used on "Jewelt Galaxies," and I had a
feeling I was in for something special.
So first off, here's the list that got me so intrigued: Flute,
Tabla, Tapes, Orchestra Bells, Electric Guitar, Omnichord,
Microphone, Clarinet, Violin Bow, Acoustic Guitar, Organ,
Shakers, Mixer, Tambourine, Floor Tom, & Sleigh Bells. Quite an
amalgamation of randomness, if you ask me. Most important,
however, is that this trio of Cantu-Ledesma, Scott Hewicker,
and Alexis Georgopoulos put them to good use.
"Jewelt Galaxies" manages to turn the aural aspects of space
travel into something wholly organic. That's not an easy task.
Yet, this trio combine so many conflicting elements and do so
with such skill that everything fits perfectly and flows
naturally. Take the last track on this three track CD-R,
     "Tintinnabulations." Sparse, heavily-treated electric guitar
adds the spacious elements of the black stellar vacuum. It's
disjointed enough that you can never quite get a firm grasp on
it. The use of bells and other chromatics are what add the
earth-element to the proceedings. It's an excellent contrast,
but the varying sounds work together wonderfully.
The centerpiece (figuratively and literally) of The Alps debut
is the 17+ minute "The River Lies With the Lilies." A simply
plucked acoustic guitar flirts with a minimally played
clarinet, creating a whimsical butterfly dance, floating within
the treetops. As the clarinet picks up and the flute begins
it's descent, background drones keep everything soaked in dirt.
An electric guitar picks up the slack as the track moves on,
creating something more discordant than the track's peaceful
beginnings. It's like floating down a mountain stream and
eventually hitting some serious rapids. It's an excellent
combination and this piece never gets boring.
The Alps are a great new band. This project from the Tarentel
camp blew every preconceived notion I had away. "Jewelt
Galaxies" is an original, wonderful excursion through the ins
and outs of the earth and surrounding galaxy. One listen to
this and you'll be ready to explode into tiny bits of cosmic
     dust. Highly recommended.
