It is not often a release rolls through the door that
actually stops your breath on its very mention, but
this is one of those releases. Housed in lavish
rubber coated card and decorated with the most
beautiful artwork since, well, since the 1980s
Cocteau Twins sleeves, this really is a muso's wet
dream. From their first album, the stark and original
"Garlands", to the love-it-or-hate-it "Milk and
Kisses" the Cocteau Twins have always had an
irreverent magic in their recordings, and this lavish
4cd set compiles all of their highly sought after and
collectible Eps and singles containing some of their
most ethereal moments. It's hard to be objective
about your favourite band but this really is a set of
the highest quality, far removed from the standard
B-sides collections littering the shelves at this
time of year. And although the Cocteau Twins have
become most referenced in recent years for
influential classics such as the icy shoegazing of
"Blue Bell Knoll" and lilting romantic swoon of
"Treasure", these Eps used to be considered as
important and creative as the albums themselves.
Listening to the Otherness EP it is hard not to think
about just how much the Cocteau Twins have influenced
the direction of modern electronic music. With
tremors resonating through most of the Morr Music
catalogue just for starters, never has there been a
better time for newcomers to become familiar with
this crucial band. Don't hesitate on this, it is
ridiculously limited and one of the most essential
purchases of the year. - boomkat
