▀▀▀ ▀▀▀
You don't know how many singer/songwriter CD's when
get in here. By volume, I'd say they are about one
out of every fifth CD we get in. I'm mean, it kind
of makes sense. In an age where home recording and
producing is so readily available to everyone, the
guy (and girl) with a guitar and a 4-track and/or a
computer can pump out albums left and right. Then
all they need to do is seek out addresses of
magazines/e-zines/weekly free papers and start
sending away.
Needless to say, most of these records should never
have been made in the first place. I'm not against
people recording their songs, but sometimes people
should realize that maybe their songwriting
abilities aren't as strong as those truly making a
living at it. and I know I'm setting this album up
for one of those, ôand Adam Mugavero is one of
those guys that should have kept it to himselfö,
but I'm not.
This New York-cum-Long Island singer has something
most of the singer/songwriters that send in CD's
don't haveà an understanding that songwriting is a
craft. So often I feel like the coffee house sect
buy into a ôsoundö, or that they just emulate those
that are getting the press at the time. Nobody
seems too concerned with creating his or her own
sound. But Mugavero taps into the 70's to create an
album full of small stage charm and hippy era
sentimentality.
It's so easy to say a songwriter's influence is
coming from Nick Drake, but besides obvious people
like him and Simon and Garfunkel, Adam Mugavero
also blends in a dash of Matt Pond chamber pop into
the mix. It's the more polished Matt Pond of this
year, the older and more grown up sound that could
easily find its way onto adult contemporary
stations as easily as it could college radio.
At ten songs the album is just right. You feel it's
a comfortable and intimate listen. It doesn't
overstay its welcome and it doesn't wallow in
repetition. Each song as its own feel and
personality, some more hushed and reserved while
others bubble over with pop energy and hooks.
The whole singer/songwriter grouping might be a tad
over looked right now. And while the only major
players are people like John Vanderslice and Sam
Beam, there will always be people like Adam
Mugavero that are plugging away, giving the world
understated folk gems that will more than likely go
unnoticed by the majority of music fansà it's a
shame.
