compost records tour @ ambar, perth (30/9/01)

with compost records being one of the largest and most reputable
labels currently coming out of europe this was always going to be
a fantastic night. perth was the last stop in australia for the
compost records tour and the two headliners minus 8 & daniel magg
did not dissapoint. robert jan meyer (aka minus 8) with his unique
blend of drum & bass and nu-jazz is one of the few internationally
recognised dj/producers to come out of switzerland. daniel magg is
a german native who has been djing for almost 10 years now and has
recently taken part in some worldless people productions with the
     worldless productions team.

dan stinton started the evening with a his usual trade mark set of
quality house music. although unfortunalty there was not much of a
crowd there yet to appreciate his efforts.

mike bishop who was a surprise in the line-up, played next. his
set had a distinct tech house vibe to it as the punters filed into
the club and filled the dance floor. although a surprise "the
bishop of techno", came up with the goods as always, playing a
     quality set.

up next was martin l playing the sounds he has been pushing around
town...nu-jazz. his set was very percussive and jazzy, warming the
crowd for the international headliners, both quite renowned for
their funky style. dan beck played next, although unfortunalty i
missed his set. i have since been advised that it was ,as per
     usual, the bomb.

minus 8 was the first of the compost representatives to step up to
the decks. his set started with nu-jazz and slowly progressed
towards the drum and bass end of the spectrum. his set was
absolutely amazing, his progression between the styles seemed so
natural and was greatly appreciated by the crowd. the drum and
bass aspect was something that i was a little dubious about, not
being a huge fan of the style, but i was pleasantly surprised by
how funky and enjoyable this segment of his set was.

daniel magg's set was unlike one i have ever heard in perth
before. one could almost be forgiven for thinking that there was a
jazz band present, although it was just a fine selection of tunes
being played by the german everyone in the club was either on the
dance floor or as close as they could get to it, funking away to a
     very fruity set.

the two then went back to back to keep the audience entertained
for the rest of the evening. this was one of the most memorable
and fun gigs i have been to in a long time. the 4am close was the
worst thing about the night. hopefully these guys will come back
sometime soon, and perhaps this time they will get to play for a
     little bit longer.
