Even as a small child, Ramon Ayala heard the music, a calling that
guided his childhood passion despite the financial hardships of his
family. Today, as one of Mexico's most popular musicians, Ayala has
recorded more than 80 albums and is widely-known as "El Rey del
Accordeon" (Accordion's King).

As a young man in Monterrey, Ayala dreamed of playing accordion like his
father. Although the family was poor, his parents saved enough to buy
him his first accordion. This was an older instrument that had to be
constantly patched before he could play it. But Ayala learned quickly,
conjuring up flashy accordion licks that astonished older musicians. He
was soon playing songs house-to-house, earning extra money to help his
parents.

But the family was unable to remain in Monterrey and migrated north,
settling in the town of Reynosa near the U.S. border. Ayala's father
crossed the border to work in Texas while the young Ramon remained
behind. He worked as a shoeshine boy. Fate intervened in 1960 when the
popular band, Carta Blanca, played a Reynosa bar. Ayala approached
well-known accordion player Juan Pena and asked to play his instrument.
Pena and his fellow musicians were so impressed that offers came quickly
to the young Ayala.

But it was Carta Blanca's guitarist who would change Ayala's life. The
popular Cornelio Reyna, whose 12-string guitar work was well-known
throughout northern Mexico, took an immediate liking to Ayala. In 1961,
the pair began playing together and formed the band, Los Relampagos del
Norte. While playing city-to-city, they shaped a new sound. Theirs is a
blend of traditional forms and rock elements popularly known as
"northern" music or (in the U.S.) "Tex-Mex." The pair landed a recording
contract and released a self-titled debut album in 1961. The LP
contained their first hit, the Reyna-penned "Ya No Llores." During their
12 years together, Ayala and Reyna recorded 20 albums and garnered a
growing respect throughout Mexico. Hit songs included "Llora, Llora" and
"Ingratos Ojos Mios."

The pair parted ways in the early 1970s, and Ayala formed his own band,
Los Bravos del Norte. He recruited noted Mexican musicians, Tony
Sauceda, Jose Martinez, Jose Ivis Is, and Raul Rosales. Later
incarnations of the group also included percussionist David Laurie and
Ayala's son, Ramon Ayala, Jr. Ayala's solo career spawned dozens of
successful albums and a number of reunions with Reyna, to the delight of
their fans.

Much of Ayala's recorded work became widely available in the 1990s,
bringing his virtuoso accordion style to audiences beyond the Mexican
border. In 2002, Ram≤n Ayala y Sus Bravos Del Norte, received the Grammy
for Best Mexican/Mexican-American Album for En Vivo...El Hombre Y Su
Musica. 10 Exitos Imparables was released.
