In 1983, a mystery man rolled onto the L.A. scene. He stayed at the
Beverly Hills Hilton, drove a white convertible Mercedes, and dated
beautiful women. He recorded and album under the pseudonym "Lewis" and
as quickly as he arrived, he vanished without a trace. All that is
known of Lewis to this day is conjecture: a rumour that he was a con
artist who fled after not paying for L'Amour photo-shoot and a dubious
theory that he was not actually of this earth. The ingredients of his
album are simple-smooth synthesizers, feather-light piano, ethereal
vocals, and the gentle plucking of accoustic guitars. Yet, the effects
are arresting: a spine-tingling, sombeer tone that reminds one of
Springsteen's "Nebraska", Arthur Russell's "World Of Echo", or Angelo
Badalamenti's atmospheric soundtracks. Lewis remains a ghost, a total
mystery, but now his music will be heard.
