For Ryan Lee Crosby, pursuing a higher education
taught him more than he had ever imagined learning.
While attaining a degree in English literature at
Northeastern University in Boston,
singer/songwriter Ryan Lee Crosby wrestled with
addiction, was homeless on numerous occasions, and
stood by his fatherΓÇÖs bedside as the man battled
terminal cancer. In addition to pursuing an
education, Ryan Lee Crosby was also chasing his
muse full time with his indie rock band, Cancer to
the Stars, a group named before his fatherΓÇÖs
diagnosis that released several EPs and one album.
During this time of overwhelming emotional stress
and isolation, Ryan Lee Crosby developed a
three-year addiction to alcohol and tranquilizers
that eventually rendered him a patient in the same
hospital as his father after an overdose that
nearly proved fatal.
In 2004, feeling an urgent sense of gratitude at
his fatherΓÇÖs cancer having gone into remission,
the recently graduated Crosby withdrew from his
addictions. Inspired by the work of Elliott Smith,
Leonard Cohen, and Charles Bukowski, Ryan Lee
Crosby began working with hushed tones while
keeping an intense focus on songwriting. During the
dead of Boston winter in January 2005, Ryan Lee
Crosby began working with producer Daniel
Daskivich, and the duo formed Ryan Lee & the
Mindless along with drummer Justin Tibbetts. In
November of 2005, the debut album There is no Music
was released to critical acclaim in Boston. A
populist work in all senses, There is no Music
rides the lines between folk, punk rock, and pop
music, with universal themes of freedom and
redemption, filtered through Ryan Lee CrosbyΓÇÖs
unique voice.
By bringing together elements of the 1960's folk
revival and early 1990's alternative, Ryan Lee &
The Mindless have created a sound that is as much
American folk as it is punk rock, bridging the
small gap between these populist forms. This is
music that belongs to everyone, as it should. And
so we give to you Ryan Lee & The Mindless.
