│ Whether they intend to or not, Hooverphonic can't help coming off as │
│ trend- capitalists: after all, much of their 1997 debut A New │
│ Stereophonic Sound Spectacular was a dead ringer for Portishead -- │
│ all warmed- over slinky trip-hop with vague noir-ish undertones. So │
│ it's at least a pleasant surprise that Blue Wonder Power Milk bears │
│ less overall resemblance to that Bristol duo. This time, Hooverphonic │
│ spreads their similarities around more liberally -- a little │
│ Bjork-ish strings- over- beats production here, a little Cocteau │
│ Twins melodic moody fuzziness there, and all sprinkled with the │
│ latest rhythmic/ sonic touches -- mostly of the now- almost- cliche │
│ drum- and- bass variety. On the bright side, "Battersea" has a │
│ lovely, airy melody that befits its name; and the churchy "Eden" at │
│ least creates a somber enough mood for lonely quiet nights. │
