This Santa Monica, California born and raisedproducer/DJ plays all
of the instruments that you hearon his records. DAEDELUS was first
schooled inbass clarinet and double bass, then more ghettotrained
in piano and electric bass, accordian, omnichord, melodica, and his
four string, modified tuningguitar. He uses every kind of vintage
drummachine and keyboard possible, often roland tr-606,roland
sh-09, "various kids keyboards andnoisemakers", effects pedals and
more. He playsdirectly into Pro-tools and uses it to
arrange,sequence and mix his music.
His pallette for sampling is ultra diverse. He's notyour
conventional beat-digger kinda cat, he's more ofa sound-source
fiend. From classical to gospel andelectro to new-jack-swing-rave,
free-jazz to Japanesepop sounds, nothing get's overlooked. His DJ
sets areas broad too. Usually reaching much faster tempos thenhe
composes at, DAEDELUS is known to put Q-Tip at 45on top of krunk
Squarepusher, Stevie Wonder's "GoldenLady" on top of Prefuse 73's
Divine Styler vocal chopand all kinds of stuff on top of, or next
to, "Meteor" byNobukazu Takemura. His recent DJ sets have
visitedconcentrated areas of ragga-jungle, electro-hop, andsad or
"dying" songs by artists like GodSpeed You!Black Emperor, the
Smiths, Lush, "Adagio for Strings" bySamuel Barber and tracks from
the soundtrack toWillyWonka and the Chocolate Factory. He can go in
a lot ofdifferent directions. Check out the EP in front of you and
you will undoubtedly hear his eclectic sensibilities.
The Household EP, in a word, is "intimate." He saysthat "all of the
titles are references to householdnoise items like the doorbell,
alarm clocks and the noiseytelevision with rabbit ears", and so on.
"[It's a]portrait of sound, where the little things can be epicand
meaningful . . . it's larger than it would seemby the words
itself". The lead-off cut was originallycomposed as the 2002 theme
for the Los Angeles radio show Spaceways on KPFK 90.7FM. It was
from an air check of this show that featured a medley of DAEDELUS
tracks including "Busy Signal" that SCOTT HERREN (owner of EASTDEV,
aka Prefuse 73 and Savath+Savalas) called Spaceways host and
EASTDEV co-director CARLOSNINO and said "we gotta put this out".
The rest is infront of you. The songs were sent out, PREFUSE 73
executed his a killer remix to the beat-box drenched "Busy Signal"
cut and KOZYNDAN flipped the cover art. What you see in that
illustration is what's really going on in DAEDELUS' Portrait of the
Artist studio! Even the little bunnys, though maybe not that many.
We're very happy to bring you The Household EP andhope that you
will enjoy it just as much as we do. --hefty records
