█ The Lost World: Jurassic Park: (John Williams) █
█ Many sequels to popular action films are darker █
█ than the original. With this movie, Spielberg █
█ called in the cinematographer from Schindler's █
█ List and asked Michael Crichton to write a █
█ similarly dark story. Likewise, John William's █
█ score for The Lost World is much darker and more █
█ brooding than the first. █
█ █
█ For the sake of horror, Williams writes a █
█ magnificent score for this film. The charm and █
█ dreamy mystique of Jurassic Park is completely █
█ absent from the start. The main title is a █
█ pulsating, monstrously brass theme that rumbles █
█ beneath the surface of almost every track on the █
█ score. It lacks the personality of the two themes █
█ from the first score. Of course, there really is █
█ no need for mystery in this score --as the █
█ audience, we all KNOW what's going to happen on █
█ Site B-- but it was the mystery in the score to █
█ Jurassic Park that made it special. The main theme █
█ to The Lost World hits you in the face like a █
█ brick at the very first moment. Granted, it is a █
█ ambitious Williams theme of epic proportion that █
█ eclipses many other modern film themes; but it █
█ does not stand up among the classic Williams █
█ themes. █
█ █
█ I was disappointed by the lack of loyalty to the █
█ themes and rhythms of Jurassic Park. Sure, this █
█ score is supposed to stand alone, but Williams has █
█ always been one of the best composers of █
█ integrating themes in between sequels. The brass █
█ theme from the first film (otherwise known as the █
█ one heard in "Journey to the Island") echoes █
█ distantly in the background as Camp Jurassic is █
█ discovered. It only bursts on once before the end █
█ credits, and even that was a re-used cue from the █
█ first score. The main theme from Jurassic Park is █
█ not used at all before the end credits. The medley █
█ of themes heard over those credits will be █
█ recognized by Williams fans as the suite that █
█ Williams conducts on his concert tours. This █
█ version is a bit lackluster and has some very █
█ obvious and intrusive transitions. As an end to █
█ The Lost World and a suite for Jurassic Park, it █
█ ultimately left a sour taste in my mouth. Oddly, █
█ it doesn't feature two things that I would have █
█ expected: the The Lost World theme itself, and the █
█ use of a choir. █
█ █
█ Overall, this score is still very good. The █
█ sequence with the stegosaurus dinosaurs on the █
█ creek is uplifting. But with more horror elements █
█ and less emphasis on theme, it is not as enjoyable █
█ as Jurassic Park. It was a tough act to follow, █
█ and the score undoubtedly works magnificently when █
█ accompanied by the big screen. Alone it has some █
█ very driving and momentous moments --and some very █
█ good chase cues. But the lack of thematic beauty █
█ and personality causes it falls one step short of █
█ the original. The assignment for the third █
█ Jurassic Park film has been rumoured to fall on █
█ the desk of either John Williams or James Horner. █
