██ To what extent is it necessary to be entirely strung out ██
██ before you can chill out? Does the concept of chill out ██
██ exist solely within a dialectical relation to getting ██
██ cranked up (thesis), and strung out (antithesis)? Is ██
██ chill out a modern phenomenon, or can it be seen as a ██
██ timeless one? Can we speak meaningfully of chilling out ██
██ as an art? Or is it an art only in the sense that love ██
██ or war can also be viewed as arts? Are the sleeve notes ██
██ for this compilation of the finest contemporary chill out ██
██ going to consist entirely of questions? And if this is ██
██ the case will they themselves require their own equivalent ██
██ chill out, in the form of a lot of answers? To this ██
██ question let me say, emphatically, yes. ██
██ And yes to the others as well. Muscles bound in sweat- ██
██ strained shackles, the head a super ball bounced between ██
██ thought's brick walls, the sensual thrum of big beat ██
██ carrying limbs and hands and feet from vibrating dance ██
██ floor to tip-tilting bed. The whole night you've swum ██
██ toward strangers as if they were your friends, and now ██
██ you wrestle with your closest friend, and they've become ██
██ a stranger. Retinal after images exploding into mirror- ██
██ bright day, and yet... and yet... any kind of respose - ██
██ let alone the velvety black unconsciousness desired - ██
██ lies so many thousands of feet below and to the left, ██
██ inaccessible except through the tiny door, the key to ██
██ which you left behind in the club, a cab ride across the ██
██ past five galaxies. The ragged jump-cut from one ██
██ intolerable thought to the next vile image, all of them ██
██ synchronised with the fraying of the aorta as your organic ██
██ piston punches out its big end. Death is an engine shaking ██
██ itself to pieces on top of a drum kit. ██
██ Millions of nerve impulses transmit the evolutionary ██
██ message that the entire world is a fingernail drawn across ██
██ the blackboard of space ██
██ A trickle of lukewarm water. The soft swich of horses' ██
██ tails brushing against calfskin drums. Silk peeling away ██
██ from skin, each resistan hair of ticket of thorns; your ██
██ drogue has finally opened and you're falling to earth. ██
██ Inconsequential thoughts like primatic beads oscillate on ██
██ a feedback loop of idiotic drool. Waves fall on the shore ██
██ at your feet as a diaphanous minion plants acupuncture ██
██ needles in your ankles. Swelling organ chords played by a ██
██ fallen angel. Is chill out an art? Why yes, of course, it's ██
██ an art to allow the whole go-round to slow and slow and ██
██ slow, so that the zoetropes become lines of poetry and the ██
██ Roadrunner takes up crochet. Regency bucks wired on tobacco ██
██ take time out to lounge about, their woolly heads full of ██
██ Handel. Good morning oval teenies with your teeny-weeny ██
██ anxieties. Put on the disc and let the draw retract into ██
██ the red-lights-winking bulk of the star ship player. Enter ██
██ the sound lock, trail your fingers in weeds of unravelling ██
██ stress. Let the whole coloratura well over, soon it will be ██
