░░ The High Focus label's twisted lyricist in residence has recently
░░ published his first ever book ù a collection of lyrics, poems,
░░ illustrations, other oddities ù and to coincide with the launch he also
░░ releases this surprise four track EP.
░░
░░ Off Piste is similar in feel to his Touching Scenes album, which was
░░ somewhat of a departure in sound from his two previous Chemo helmed
░░ projects, but it's still brimming with the same potent brew of dark
░░ imagery and perverse humour that has fuelled Baxter's lyricism over the
░░ years and earned him a reputation as one of the UK's most unique voices.
░░
░░ While he and Chemo had found an almost flawless chemistry on So We Ate
░░ Them Whole and Mansion 38, the variation of producers on these more
░░ recent projects is a refreshing move and seems to have given Baxter an
░░ extra edge to his writing. Take "Drowned Dogs" for example, which
░░ features a notably strong guest spot from Split Prophet's own Datkid as
░░ the pair go back to back over some impeccable synth-driven boom bap from
░░ Dirty Dike; or the lead single "Red Hawaiians", brainchild of Strange U
░░ producer Dr Zygote who switches the beat up midway through, adding
░░ further appeal to an already supreme opening track.
░░
░░ The standout moment however is the closing number. "The Stump" features
░░ production from the aforementioned Chemo alongside acclaimed DJ and
░░ producer Last Japan, the brains behind "Vulture", a high point from
░░ Touching Scenes. The track opens with the sound of war drums merging with
░░ haunting synths and distorted vocal samples, before building into a
░░ grimy, atmospheric extravaganza. It's a fitting end to the EP, which sits
░░ as another blackened gem in Baxter's crown.
