The Heroine Sheiks formed in spring of 1999 and have caused a
National stir in a very short period of time. Their first release
was a single on Amrep records ("We Are The" b/w "Let's Fight" and
"Swedish Fly"). Their debut album, "Rape On The Installment Plan"
was released on Reptilian Records in November of 2000.
Shannon Selberg started the Heroine Sheiks after the break-up of
Minneapolis-based Cows, one of America's great degenerate punk-
rock bands. When the Cows called it quits at the tail end of 1998
after almost 12 years and the release of 9 full-length albums and
countless EP's, Selberg found himself in New York City without a
band - more importantly he was without a forum for his twisted,
unpredictable Vaudeville act.
Selberg was already friends with George Porfiris (bassist), and
they started playing together and writing some songs. The decision
was soon made to start a full-fledged band, and they began the
search for the other members. "The idea was to take our time and
get the best players we could - not only great musicians but
people who could dedicate themselves to this project and could add
something and wouldn't always have one eye always looking toward
'a better opportunity'" says Selberg. After trying out many
people, they found the perfect combination of talented folks that
includes former Swans/Foetus guitarist Norman Westberg, bassist
George Porfiris (Tucker, Ultra Bide, Liquid State), drummer John
Fell (Kelly Township, Polo Pony, Velour, China Shop), and
keyboardist Eric Eble (Kings County Queens). (rubricrecords.com)
The second album by the Heroine Sheiks is in-your-face angst, and
one would expect no less from Shannon Selberg. As such willfully
brutal post-punk goes, though, it's fairly strong. There are
strong traces of funk, experimental electronic washes, and hard
rock in the ominous guitar crunch. Selberg is a considerably
better singer than most vocalists who play their hand at this
game, letting some hints of humor and hip phrasing into his
admirable lungpower. But the lyrics, as could be anticipated, are
not feel-good stuff, right from the opening "Army Brat," with its
couplet, "I am an army brat/My dick's a baseball bat." More fun
trouble to contemplate follows, where it's the masochistic
romantic obsession of "Grab the Wheel," the rants against a
universally favorite target in "My Boss," and the suicidal
despondence in the aftermath of a bad gig in "Mas Suicide."
Actually, more songs deal with tortured romance and relationships
than any other topic, though. The hidden final bits (following a
few minutes of silence), with stuttering samples of an old R&B
record and a lovesick phone message, don't add anything of import
to the disc. (allmusic.com)
