Release Notes:
One of the unjustly obscure records from the 1950s
is this Coral LPrecorded by Al Cohn with Bob
Brookmeyer, with both men contributing swinging
originals and arrangements. Like Brookmeyer's many
small group sessions with baritone saxophonist
Gerry Mulligan, he meshes extremely well with the
leader's cool tenor sax. The rhythm section
includes pianist Mose Allison, bassist Teddy
Kotick, and drummer Nick Stabulas, who provide
tremendous support for the two horns. At one point,
Cohn's tenor almost suggests the sound of an
accordion in Brookmeyer's cheerful "Good Spirits."
Cohn's smooth ballad "Winter" is a lyrical
masterpiece. Cohn and Brookmeyer also take turns
bringing new life to old chestnuts such as "Ill
Wind," "Chloe," and "S-H-I-N-E." This was a very
rare LP, originally released in 1957.
