│║ ...but it's not Black Hand Inn. To be fair, a lot of things ║ │
│║ aren't Black Hand inn. Reign In Blood, Peace Sells, Kill em ║ │
│║ All, Paranoid, Piece of Mind; these are genre defining ║ │
│║ transcending milestones that are vital to metal's artistic ║ │
│║ canvas, not overrated crowd pleasers. But classics they may ║ │
│║ be, they, along with Death Or Glory, just don't quite hit ║ │
│║ that mark. Some might say I came to a false conclusion ║ │
│║ based on approaching Running Wild's discography in a ║ │
│║ bizarre order (it was based on what was the cheapest on ║ │
│║ Amazon). Whatever attaches itself to you the first embeds ║ │
│║ itself to you as the best, so they say. But I think I can ║ │
│║ safely say, after giving each album a through anaylsis, in ║ │
│║ a way that I've never really done with two albums before, ║ │
│║ that Black Hand Inn is the superior LP. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ But enough mild BBQ takes, let's get to how fucking ║ │
│║ brilliant Death or Glory is in its own right. What's ║ │
│║ especially remarkable is the year this came out in. 1989, ║ │
│║ when most heavy metal bands were either still touring for ║ │
│║ whatever they released in 1988, or had just run out of ║ │
│║ steam. Your average Vh1 Classic viewer might view 89 as the ║ │
│║ year when metal died, mostly because they were ignoring the ║ │
│║ slew of brilliant death metal and thrash metal albums from ║ │
│║ the underground as they do. But still, those genres don't ║ │
│║ appeal to everyone, so the fact is, Candlemass aside, 89 ║ │
│║ was a pretty lonely year for proper heavy metal. Then Death ║ │
│║ or Glory happened. Judging from how beloved this is in the ║ │
│║ Running Wild fandom, I think it is safe to say that it more ║ │
│║ than made up for the heavy metal deficiency. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ You know your dealing with something special the second ║ │
│║ that intro to Riding The Storm fires up. Personally, the ║ │
│║ first third of the song before the song starts proper is ║ │
│║ slightly more entertaining, but that's just my opinion. ║ │
│║ It's not difficult to understand why so many people call ║ │
│║ Death Or Glory Running Wild's finest hour with this as it's ║ │
│║ opening track. Then there's Bad To The Bone, which I didn't ║ │
│║ quite understand its popularity until it was pointed out to ║ │
│║ me that it's rather sub-par opening riff can act as a ║ │
│║ deterrent to everything else about the song which is ║ │
│║ unquestionably Priest tier, especially the guitar solos. It ║ │
│║ can be easy to forget sometimes that metal lives and dies ║ │
│║ on it's opening/main riff that everything else can be cast ║ │
│║ aside if it's not up to snuff. Perhaps taking a title from ║ │
│║ a popular George Thorogood song might have acted as a ║ │
│║ stifler as well. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ That being said, all the heaping praise for Blazon Stone ║ │
│║ can't stop the illegal baby elephant tusk ivory works of ║ │
│║ art known as Marooned and The Battle of Waterloo. The ║ │
│║ former, despite being an ode to being shipwrecked rather ║ │
│║ than pure piracy, perfectly and pristinely captures the ║ │
│║ essence of Running Wild's pirate metal, particularly with ║ │
│║ the yo-ho-ho vocal sections acting as the song's ║ │
│║ pre-chrous. The latter uses the Battle Hymns' death march ║ │
│║ as a rhythmic skeleton and integrates Rolf's vocals (top of ║ │
│║ the line by this moment, and would only get better) and ║ │
│║ lethal fretwork for the muscle of a top notch messenger. ║ │
│║ It's omen: war is hell. Certainly not the first time it's ║ │
│║ been uttered, and Waterloo's specific example is a quite ║ │
│║ far off from current year, but that doesn't make it any ║ │
│║ less effective. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Death or Glory is seminal heavy metal, and a war cry ║ │
│║ against the oncoming hordes of emerging death metal bands. ║ │
│║ Classic metal songwriting will always have a place in metal ║ │
│║ regardless of current trends and developing styles. Buy ║ │
│║ one, buy one for your wife, buy one for your kids, and if ║ │
│║ applicable, buy one for your side-chick. But just remember, ║ │
│║ as great as it is, Running Wild would get even ║ │
│║ better........ ║ │
