Phillip Jackson (Patrick Thompson), a cyber-crime investigator
with the Sydney Police Force, has recently returned from Hamburg,
Germany, where his computer hacking skills and knowledge of the
internet have been critical in the cracking of a bizarre
"voluntary cannibalism" case. But the details of the case, and
the sights he has witnessed, have had a profound emotional effect
on him, going so far as to threaten his relationship with Abbey
(Rose Ashton), his beautiful girlfriend.
Back home, Phillip resumes his work policing the dark underbelly
of the internet. One morning, his colleague, Nigel (Matthew Le
Nevez), jokingly forwards him details of websites aimed at
"Feeders" and "Gainers", participants in a sexual sub-culture in
which fat-admiring men seek out obese women. But one such
website, FeederX.com, appears to be something more than just an
outlet for fat fetishism and erotica. Somebody at FeederX is
going too far, feeding his submissive charges during live
internet broadcasts, while charting their weight gain, vital bio
-signs, blood pressure and cholesterol and blood sugar levels.
He's also taking bets on the predicted time of each Gainer's
demise.
Determined to uncover the perpetrator of what he believes amount
to serial killings, Phillip tracks the site's proprietor to
Toledo, Ohio, where he makes a terrifying discovery that if it
doesn't cost him his life will certainly cost him his sanity.
Laced with a deep vein of dark humour (most notably in the film's
brilliantly ironic use of several iconic pop songs), FEED is a
fast-paced, intelligent, topical and highly entertaining thriller
that, given its subject matter, deftly manages to avoid being
exploitative. Also deeply disturbing in the manner in which it
effectively presents the ambiguities of its characters'
personalities, it is a film guaranteed to provoke heated
discussions amongst viewers long after the final credits have
rolled.
