- NOTES
JP DEN TEX is an 'Emotional Nomad' wandering in a musical
landscape between Americana and European music styles such
as French Chanson.
JP's first noticeable musical adventure was in the early
70's as a member of Tortilla, a legendary Dutch band whose
music now would be described as alt.country. In the 80's
Den Tex recorded five critically acclaimed solo albums
including the sublime and now much sought after 'A Quiet
Street in Paris'. His lyrics turned slowly from
melancholic observations (mostly in the third person) into
very personal short stories, with the author himself being
the main character. By then JP started integrating more
and more European elements into his Americana, often using
Spanish, French or Italian to give his music a distinctly
continental flavour. At the beginning of the 90's JP
interrupted his solo activities for participation in a
successful band project called Les Gueux (CD 'After Hours'
- 1992). In 1998 he went solo again releasing a touching,
very personal new album called 'Emotional Nomads'.
"Painstakingly honest, that's how I'd like to be", JP
wrote in the CD booklet. 'Emotional Nomads' was followed
by the moody 'Hotel Yankee Tango' (2000) and the
lighthearted 'La Jeune Fille Au Chewing Gum', JP DEN TEX'
first album for CoraZong Records.
'La Jeune Fille Au Chewing Gum' was unmistakably
influenced by JP's early childhood. He grew up in the
village of Sleeuwijk in the southern part of Holland. The
area where Holland still has a little bit of a lazy,
Burgundian streak. The area where the Route Napoleon, that
old cobble stone road from Paris via Brussels and Antwerp
to Amsterdam, was halted by big rivers crossing the
lowlands on their way to the sea, and where cars still had
to be ferried across in the fifties?
Obviously the docking and loading of the ferries presented
a real spectacle for the 5-year-old kid, through it he
felt the powerful pulse of life's excitement going through
his little village. Whenever possible young JP could be
found at the riverside, watching the moustached,
nonchalant French truck driver with his smelly Gitane
cigarette hanging loosely from his lips, getting ferried
across by capable ferrymen. Den Tex also noticed the
elated American tourist who, especially for this purpose,
had brought his black Buick Convertible De Luxe all the
way from America by steamer. For the 5-year-old boy, these
two cultures, the casual French attitude to life and the
unbeatably cool and modern American spirit, were the two
elements which eventually had to become the basis of his
own cultural landscape.
Referring to his co-operation with long time musical
partner Jac Bico, Den Tex suggests that 'La Jeune Fille Au
Chewing Gum' 'should not be considered as a real solo
album, but more as an artistic duet'. A dialogue between
the singer/songwriter JP and the musician/producer Bico,
who not only produced the album but also provided its main
instrumental backing. And as such was responsible for the
great Morricone-like guitar phrases, the tinkling
mandolins and the dark, bluesy musical clouds which are so
characteristic of the atmosphere on the album.

JP Den Tex - Emotional Nomads (music that inspired the
film)
uitgekomen cd: La Jeune Fille Au Chewing Gum.
Americana,
singer-songwriter, chansons, roots, John Hiatt, Willy

About JP den Tex:
(Dutch)
JP Den Tex is ΘΘn van Nederlands meest begenadigde
singer/songwriters.
publiek nagenoeg onzichtbaar gebleven.
talent.
o.a. Gram Parsons, Neil Young en The Band verscheen in
talentvolle broer Emile deel uitmaakte. Jan Donkers
belangrijke zeventiger jaren groepen.
is.
groep 'Les Gueux' (CD 'After Hours', 1992).
Zonder daarbij
echter zijn alsmaar persoonlijker wordende,
existentialistische zwerftocht te verloochenen.
"Painstakingly honest, that's how I'd like to beà" zegt
gegaan.
-
(English)
Singer/songwriter JP Den Tex (1950) can be regarded as a
real stayer in the Dutch music scene. The first time he
stood in the limelight was in the seventies, when he and
his brother Emile drew nation wide attention with their
(then revolutionary) mixture of American orientated pop
music, and (typical Dutch) lyrical observations.
"Tortilla" was the exotic name of the group, "Little
Heroes" the (appropriate burgherly) title of the album.
Now over fifty, but alive and kicking and living in
Amsterdam, JP is still trying to improve the same subtle
trick: fusing American raw energy with continental "savoir
vivre". Though his observations have tended to become more
personal and even deliberately subjective, every new CD
mainly presents us with another eclectic twist of his
surprisingly universal musical talent. Which might be
described best as being melancholic and soulful by nature,
while at the same time elegantly provocative and
philosophical by necessityà
