███▓ The general topic approached by rappers has continually changed ▓███
███▓ since its initial rise to fame in the early-to-mid 80's. In its ▓███
███▓ early days, hip-hop was more about boasts concerning technical ▓███
███▓ skills or simply exploration of the genre (Erik B. & Rakin); in the ▓███
███▓ late-80's, gangsta rap and crime-related subjects got in vogue ▓███
███▓ (N.W.A.); in the early/mid-90's, the gangsta image grew more ▓███
███▓ sophisticated (Notorious B.I.G.); by the time the 2000's came ▓███
███▓ around, I have no idea, things just snowballed from that point on. ▓███
███▓ ▓███
███▓ Now, when I talk about the general behavior of an entire genre, I ▓███
███▓ am either 80%+ sure that I'm not talking shit or I'm explicitly ▓███
███▓ making a guesstimation of what was going on instead of checking for ▓███
███▓ myself (turns out you don't learn that much about music history ▓███
███▓ from just listening to music), so here goes: unless groups that I ▓███
███▓ haven't checked out, such as A Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul, ▓███
███▓ completely fuck up my theory, then it wouldn't be incorrect to ▓███
███▓ believe that most of the hip-hop around the 90's had serious ▓███
███▓ undertones. Many popular songs and albums were fun to listen to, ▓███
███▓ but the context surrounding the fun was often much less joyous. ▓███
███▓ ▓███
███▓ So, why talk about "fun"? Well, one peculiar rapper appeared in ▓███
███▓ late 1991. To contextualize, Public Enemy had released Fear Of A ▓███
███▓ Black Planet a year ago, and N.W.A. had already released ▓███
███▓ EFIL4ZAGGIN earlier in 1991 before splitting up. A Tribe Called ▓███
███▓ Quest and De La Soul (both groups that I have yet to listen to) ▓███
███▓ were in full swing that year. Where hip-hop was going was yet to ▓███
███▓ really be figured out without the entry of power players like Nas ▓███
███▓ and Biggie Smalls, but in 1991, Ice Cube's cousin decided to make ▓███
███▓ an album. ▓███
███▓ ▓███
███▓ Teren Delvon Jones, also known as Del The Funky Homosapien (or Del ▓███
███▓ Tha Funkee Homosapien), released his first record, I Wish My ▓███
███▓ Brother George Was Here, at the age of 19, with Ice Cube as ▓███
███▓ executive producer; he put out a good half-dozen albums or more in ▓███
███▓ the following decades, and has most recently released an entire ▓███
███▓ album on Soundcloud for free on the 2nd of January this year. As ▓███
███▓ far as I'm informed, he remains a small but still fondly regarded ▓███
███▓ footnote in music history. I think I understand why. ▓███
███▓ ▓███
███▓ The Album ▓███
███▓ ▓███
███▓ I'll be honest here: this might be in my top 20, or maybe even my ▓███
███▓ top 10 favorite hip-hop albums of all time. I'd even dare say ▓███
███▓ without a doubt that I find it superior to N.W.A.'s entire ▓███
███▓ discography in terms of albums and EPs. There are a bunch of ▓███
███▓ reasons too: it's one of those albums where there are tons of ▓███
███▓ things to say, which is definitely good for me! To jump a head a ▓███
███▓ little bit, I already count a good 6 masterpieces minimum in this ▓███
███▓ record off the top of my head. ▓███
███▓ ▓███
███▓ Let's talk about the most important element of this record first: ▓███
███▓ the identity. IWMBGWH has an incredible identity: instead of ▓███
███▓ playing out like the usual party rap/gangsta rap stuff that ▓███
███▓ Straight Outta Compton and other records introduced, it's a whole ▓███
███▓ different beast altogether, as Del explores the party rap lifestyle ▓███
███▓ in a much more solitary way; there are no actual parties depicted, ▓███
███▓ but the energy you'd get at a party is still in there thanks to ▓███
███▓ Del's energy and the sampling. ▓███
███▓ ▓███
███▓ In that regard, it's kind of like the hip-hop equivalent of a ▓███
███▓ really good children's cartoon where they actually explore deeper ▓███
███▓ issues and introduce your kid to something more profound at a young ▓███
███▓ age in a well-done manner: the record depicts the West Coast inner ▓███
███▓ city life (generally not represented as a very pleasant one) in a ▓███
███▓ more tranquil manner, with tracks about particular assholes ▓███
███▓ pretending to be someone they aren't or jobless friends who keep ▓███
███▓ sleeping on Del's couch instead of getting a job, but he doesn't ▓███
███▓ necessarily deny any of the context in which the hip-hop scene is ▓███
███▓ mainly based in. ▓███
███▓ ▓███
███▓ Another cool thing about this album is the sampling: I imagine it's ▓███
███▓ not so surprising it's this good, since Ice Cube was a producer, ▓███
███▓ but the sampling is pretty much like a much more laid-back version ▓███
███▓ of what we saw on AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted: it's all punchy and ▓███
███▓ groovy and fun, and just as complimentary to the album's mood as ▓███
███▓ with AmeriKKKa. An interesting tidbit is that two of the ▓███
███▓ principally sampled groups in this album are Parliament and ▓███
███▓ Funkadelic, two seminal 70's funk bands led by the same guy named ▓███
███▓ George Clinton (the album's name is a reference to George). ▓███
███▓ ▓███
███▓ Del's rapping isn't particularly special: I imagine what makes that ▓███
███▓ aspect still very unusual is how banal it sounds, though that's ▓███
███▓ certainly in a good way. Actually, that makes up a large part of ▓███
███▓ how he talks about things in the album: he's mostly chill through ▓███
███▓ the course of the record, even when he talks about the less ▓███
███▓ pleasant aspects of his routine, as if he's used to it at this ▓███
███▓ point, and I find that really adds to the credibility. As for the ▓███
███▓ rapping itself, not much comment: it works, his diction is spot-on, ▓███
███▓ it's actually quite pleasant, even. ▓███
███▓ ▓███
███▓ Now, we get to the songs: most of them are incredible, and most of ▓███
███▓ them touch upon an interesting subject or another. "What Is A ▓███
███▓ Booty?" serves more as a sort of introduction, and it's perfect in ▓███
███▓ that regard. When the sampled backbone comes in, you are ▓███
███▓ immediately met with the quirky, but simultaneously funky ▓███
███▓ atmosphere that permeates about all of the record (that atmosphere ▓███
███▓ being if the world had the same color scheme as the album cover). ▓███
███▓ ▓███
███▓ We quickly meet the best song, "Mistadobalina": a scathing lyrical ▓███
███▓ beatdown of fraudulent douchebags who hog whatever fad is in these ▓███
███▓ days so as to feel like they belong even though they don't know ▓███
███▓ what actually goes on (you know, like a hipster or the closest ▓███
███▓ thing to a hipster that the 90's would have), it's an irresistible ▓███
███▓ number that succeeds in every single aspect, whether it's the ▓███
███▓ amazing percussion, the somewhat thick (less is more?) melodic ▓███
███▓ sampling, and the unforgettable lines that you can find all over ▓███
███▓ the place. ▓███
███▓ ▓███
███▓ We carry on with "The Wacky World Of Rapid Transit", where Del ▓███
███▓ attempts to use public transportation while doing his damnedest not ▓███
███▓ to fuck something up and while trying not to get harassed, all to ▓███
███▓ the beat of a particularly driving sample. The frantic speed of ▓███
███▓ this one makes it an instant winner: tons of things are going on, ▓███
███▓ but it's still entirely focused (yes, it only lasts 3 minutes, but ▓███
███▓ there is room for fucking up a 3-minute song via too much shit ▓███
███▓ going on at once). ▓███

███▓ "Pissin' On Your Steps" is a really good one also, where Del ▓███
███▓ straight up talks shit about MC Hammer and Vanilla Ice: already I ▓███
███▓ would be repeating myself if I were to talk about how phenomenal ▓███
███▓ the sampling is, but when you got the lyrics at hand, the song's ▓███
███▓ loads of fun. We also have yet another great song, "Dark Skin ▓███
███▓ Girls" is much more groove- and beat-oriented in terms of sampling, ▓███
███▓ which fits the more beat-driven flair that Del's rapping takes on ▓███
███▓ as he talks about the differences between lighter-skinned and ▓███
███▓ darker-skinned black women (as the title implies, he prefers ▓███
███▓ darker-skinned women a lot more). ▓███

███▓ So, I've already gone over 5 songs, and I almost feel like just ▓███
███▓ quickly going over to the conclusion because I'd rather listen to ▓███
███▓ this album than to talk about it, so I'll make myself briefer and ▓███
███▓ look over the best remaining tracks: for instance, we have "Dr. ▓███
███▓ Bombay", which seems to be a kind of continuation of ▓███
███▓ "Mistadobalina" (the two were released as singles), and while it's ▓███
███▓ not a particular highlight, I still like it a lot, if only because ▓███
███▓ of the sampling again. ▓███

███▓ "Sunny Meadowz" is a very mellow song, which makes sense because ▓███
███▓ this is a track about Del's morning routine: I guess you can ▓███
███▓ consider it a breather, but the beat still has a lot of the punch ▓███
███▓ that you hear on other tracks. Either way, it's a comparatively ▓███
███▓ relaxing doozy, followed by the more active "Sleepin' On My Couch", ▓███
███▓ where Del says he's getting fed up with friends ending up on his ▓███
