:: Release Notes:
::
:: Despite jet intake drones and drilling, scrambled bass lines,
:: Devillock doesn't possess most noise artists' desire to burn
:: or flay listeners' minds. He has more in common with
:: shoegazers who try to position you simultaneously within the
:: eye of the storm and the heat of the squall; even at its most
:: violent, a calming ebb rests just beneath this music's
:: surface. Rather than raging like a bonfire of discarded
:: conventions, Devillock magnifies and distorts familiar shapes
:: in shadow, much like a campfire. The album's root canal
:: crescendos should be a comforting crackle to anyone with a
:: few Merzbow or Wolf Eyes LPs on his shelf -- hell, even noise
:: neophytes have heard these sounds in jackhammers and
:: powerlines.
::
:: These Graves' form augments its easy-listening-for-perverts
:: vibe. Its four tracks -- "The Blood From", "These Graves",
:: "Weigh Forever", "On Rotten Creatures" -- feed into one
:: another to flow as a single coherent statement, just as their
:: titles form a sentence. Distorted bass from gust Matthew St.
:: Germain seethes into the red on "The Blood From", and these
:: high volume shards of sound sync up with hypnotic subliminal
:: layers and mutate into a sort of sick ambience. Main
:: manipulator Justin Meyers tweaks the wavefield enough to keep
:: things interesting after the initial abrasion warps into
:: bliss, crafting a noise narrative that bends tone like a
:: long-form Rafael Toral piece. Minute-long corollary "These
:: Graves" fades right into extended comedown "weight Forever",
:: where Meyer lowers the volume, holds out his notes and eases
:: us into "On Rotten Creatures"'s total dissolution.
::
:: You could argue that the nihilism inherent to an album that
:: disintegrates during its last leg asserts These Graves as a
:: destructive work in spite of its inability to subvert our
:: preconceptions through noise, but the decay is so understated
:: and graceful that it works more like a stylistically-muted
:: rehash of "The Blood From"'s throbbing haze. It's almost as
:: if "Weight Forever" makes the opener's warm, fuzzy qualities
:: explicit for those who missed them the first time around.
:: Imagine drinking a glass of motor oil, and then swilling down
:: a second, but adding a lime and a paper umbrella. Acclimation
:: breeds bizarre comforts.
