▄██▓░ ENJOY THIS FINE RELEASE FROM DON ░▓██▄
▄██▓░ ░▓██▄
██▓░ Gregory Isaacs, The Cool Ruler, has ridden high in the ░▓██
██▓░ reggae charts for nearly three decades with his own ░▓██
██▓░ laconic, understated style of delivery. Whether singing ░▓██
██▓░ songs of social distress or unrequited love, he is an ░▓██
██▓░ original performer and his aching delivery adds credence ░▓██
██▓░ to any tale he may tell. ░▓██
██▓░ An astute businessman as well as a talented ░▓██
██▓░ singer/songwriter, Gregory grew up in the harsh world of ░▓██
██▓░ lower-class Kingston and soon learned the ways of the ░▓██
██▓░ street to survive. Little wonder that he is one of the ░▓██
██▓░ original 1960s Rude Boys and has been arrested over forty ░▓██
██▓░ times throughout his life. ░▓██
██▓░ Born in 1951, Gregory knew from an early age that he ░▓██
██▓░ wanted to perform. He took the normal route for any ░▓██
██▓░ aspiring singer in Jamaica with unrewarding visits to ░▓██
██▓░ studios end producers and treading the boards in local ░▓██
██▓░ talent contests. ░▓██
██▓░ In the late 1960s a flirtation with a vocal group, the ░▓██
██▓░ Concords, came to little and he returned to the stage as ░▓██
██▓░ a solo artist, recording a handful of tracks for producer ░▓██
██▓░ Rupie Edwards. By 1970 Gregory had some early works ░▓██
██▓░ released, including a cover of the standard 'You Are My ░▓██
██▓░ Sunshine' which, luckily, was hidden on the flip side of ░▓██
██▓░ the single 'Midnight Sunshine' from Wailers bass player ░▓██
██▓░ Aston 'Family Man' Barrett. ░▓██
██▓░ 1974 saw things improve dramatically with hits coming ░▓██
██▓░ from a variety of producers including Glen Brown's ░▓██
██▓░ proverbial 'One One Cocoa', the sublime 'Lonely Soldier' ░▓██
██▓░ for Randy's, and 'The Sun Shines For Me', a cover of ░▓██
██▓░ master songwriter Bob Andy's creation. The formation of ░▓██
██▓░ the African Museum record label with singer Errol Dunkley ░▓██
██▓░ also took place at this time, and this enabled him to ░▓██
██▓░ gain financial and artistic independence. ░▓██
██▓░ This self-sufficiency gave Isaacs freedom from being tied ░▓██
██▓░ down to the restrictions and poor financial rewards that ░▓██
██▓░ the average Jamaican singer suffered from at the hands of ░▓██
██▓░ the producers who held the purse strings tightly. ░▓██
██▓░ Isaacs' dual persona of the heartbroken lover and the ░▓██
██▓░ held-down ghetto dweller mixed well, as his style of ░▓██
██▓░ delivery could relate to both. By 1977, the ghetto ░▓██
██▓░ spokesman was predominant with the release of the ░▓██
██▓░ mesmerising 'Mr Isaacs' album. Rather than a collection ░▓██
██▓░ of singles, this was a concept album guiding the listener ░▓██
██▓░ through the trials and tribulations of life in the slums ░▓██
██▓░ of Kingston and was a strong seller in a ░▓██
██▓░ singles-dominated marketplace. ░▓██
██▓░ Another superb summation of Isaacs the ghetto commentator ░▓██
██▓░ is the observant 'Mr Know It All', its pounding rhythm ░▓██
██▓░ structure courtesy of producer Ossie Hibbert. This was ░▓██
██▓░ originally issued as a 12-inch single and was a massive ░▓██
██▓░ hit on both sides of the Atlantic just as the roots ░▓██
██▓░ reggae sound was peaking, putting him firmly in the ░▓██
██▓░ public eye. ░▓██
██▓░ Never less than prolific, although always maintaining a ░▓██
██▓░ high standard, Isaacs continued to record for numerous ░▓██
██▓░ producers but kept the superior work for his own African ░▓██
██▓░ Museum set-up. From this came 'Cool Ruler' (1978) and ░▓██
██▓░ 'Soon Forward' (1979), two albums released in the UK by ░▓██
██▓░ Virgin's Front Line label which solidified his position ░▓██
██▓░ at the top of the reggae industry with few rivals beyond ░▓██
██▓░ the prodigious Dennis Brown. His link-up with Sly Dunbar ░▓██
██▓░ and Robbie Shakespeare's Taxi label cemented his position ░▓██
██▓░ even more firmly, riding the reggae chart with hit after ░▓██
██▓░ hit, and his signing in the UK to Island Records took his ░▓██
██▓░ career fully into the international arena. His debut ░▓██
██▓░ Island album 'Night Nurse' (1982) gained massive sales ░▓██
██▓░ throughout Jamaica, Europe and the US, the title track ░▓██
██▓░ being covered by Simply Red and latterly providing a ░▓██
██▓░ theme tune to a national UK TV ad. ░▓██
██▓░ By this time, his lamenting 'lost lover' alter ego had ░▓██
██▓░ taken control - as, unfortunately, had cocaine. This was ░▓██
██▓░ a problem that would haunt him for the following years ░▓██
██▓░ and cause a deterioration in his voice alongside the loss ░▓██
██▓░ of a number of teeth. After a spell in Kingston's ░▓██
██▓░ notorious General Penitentiary in the mid 198Os, Gregory ░▓██
██▓░ was broke and ready to work with any producer who had ░▓██
██▓░ money to offer. Luckily, due to his prodigious talent, ░▓██
██▓░ the standards rarely dropped and a plethora of quality ░▓██
██▓░ music came forth throughout the remainder of the decade. ░▓██
██▓░ Unfazed by the new computer-generated or 'digital' rhythm ░▓██
██▓░ style which had overtaken Jamaica by 1986 and stopped ░▓██
██▓░ many seasoned singers in their tracks, Gregory scored ░▓██
██▓░ with one of his biggest hits, 'Rumours', for producer ░▓██
██▓░ Augustus 'Gussie' Clarke. Other powerful digital roots ░▓██
██▓░ reggae recordings followed, notably 'Hard Drugs' for one ░▓██
██▓░ time DJ turned producer Tapper Zukie and 'Let Off Supm' ░▓██
██▓░ twinning with Dennis Brown. ░▓██
██▓░ Isaacs was riding on a crest of a wave throughout the ░▓██
██▓░ late 1980s and was rarely out of the reggae charts. By ░▓██
██▓░ the start of the following decade, however, his output ░▓██
██▓░ had started to slow as personal problems became apparent ░▓██
██▓░ and he started on a long-term cleanup operation. ░▓██
██▓░ Nevertheless, a considerable amount of very capable and ░▓██
██▓░ listenable releases were issued throughout the decade ░▓██
██▓░ both as singles and albums, the subject matter, as was ░▓██
██▓░ usual for Gregory, running from soft, wistful songs of ░▓██
██▓░ love to harsh social commentary. ░▓██
██▓░ A revitalised Gregory Isaacs has emerged in the new ░▓██
██▓░ millennium, still releasing excellent recordings and, ░▓██
██▓░ like his contemporary Horace Andy, he has moved into ░▓██
██▓░ different fields alongside traditional reggae music. Most ░▓██
██▓░ notably, this encompasses offering dance mixes of his ░▓██
██▓░ work aimed more at the night-clubber than the dreadlock ░▓██
██▓░ with pounding bass-lines and stinging hi-hats to keep the ░▓██
██▓░ crowds moving. ░▓██
██▓░ No doubt it is Isaacs the sharp businessman who spotted ░▓██
██▓░ the financial rewards to be reaped from the burgeoning ░▓██
██▓░ club scene, and no doubt he will continue to move reggae ░▓██
██▓░ music into new fields wherever he feels there's a profit ░▓██
██▓░ to be made. One thing's for sure - whatever style he may ░▓██
██▓░ be singing, Gregory Isaacs is an individual and talented ░▓██
██▓░ performer. Long may the Cool Ruler reign! ░▓██
