This latest installment in Tietchens' long-running Teilmenge series comes in an appropriately small,
unassuming 3-inch CD package. With each of the ôTeilmengeö tracks included here, Tietchens utilizes
minute, restrained musical gestures. The three pieces are brief sketches, constructed using the barest
of essential ingredientsùvintage synthesizers, sine waves, and static. The herky-jerky electronic
swoops of "Teilmenge 35a" are the most effusive moments on the disc, but at the same time, its
meandering patterns only serve to fuel a feeling of uneasy disinterest. Tietchens' pieces are at their
most interesting when they're at their most unrelentingly austere, which is certainly true of "Teilmenge
27" and "Teilmenge 29," where his delicate and judiciously deployed sounds are surrounded by a
palpable, cavernous emptiness.
