█ Being an avid James Horner fan, listening to White █
█ Squall is an interesting experience as this music █
█ marks the first instance of Horner being replaced █
█ by another composer mid-project because the █
█ director, Ridley Scott, didn't like the music he █
█ had come up with. The replacement was Jeff Rona, █
█ part of Hans Zimmer's Media Ventures stable, and I █
█ must say that although Rona's music is atmospheric █
█ and innovative, I would like to hear what Horner █
█ came up with because I'm sure to my ear it would █
█ have been better. Rona's approach is much █
█ different to his stablemates - his main title, █
█ 'Still Waters', is a slow, ambient piece played on █
█ an oboe with a soft male-voice backing, and █
█ 'Departures' is quiet and lyrical, this time █
█ featuring a delicate harp and pan pipes. In fact, █
█ most of the music could be described as 'relaxing' █
█ - enchanting, moody, slightly desolate seascapes █
█ with exotic elements like penny whistles, uillean █
█ pipes and even couch shells thrown in amongst a █
█ standard, albeit smaller orchestra. The music █
█ first begins to pick up during 'A Wonderful Sail', █
█ when a fiddle and drums join the orchestra in a █
█ lively montage cue, and reaches an emotional █
█ crescendo during the climactic cue 'White Squall █
█ (Lifeboats). The songs at the end of the album, █
█ performed by people like Fats Domino and Chubby █
█ Checker are included to add a bit of 1950s █
█ sentiment to the proceedings, but neither add nor █
█ detract from the overall effect. █
