Sigridur Nielsdottir's first album - released 05.
April 2001. The title means "Country bliss" and
the main theme is living in the country. 12 songs,
incl. "Banjo Cowboy", "Country Song" and "Morgun
(Morning)". The album that started the cult.
Sigridur Nielsdottir is the hottest independant
musicians in Reykjavik today - a true cult hero.
Her albums are collected by the likes of Bjork and
the mum kids. In April 2001 her first lo-fi CD
appeared in two Reykjavik record shops, Japis and
12 tonar, and cutting edge music lovers slowly
started to take notice. The album that Sigridur
took to the shops in April 2001 was her first ever
record. She had written music most of her life but
had been too busy to make an album out of it.
Since then, Sigridur has not ceased to release
albums. She did eight of them in 2001, in 2002 she
stunningly released 15 albums, and in 2003 she has
"only" made four so far. Every album has 12 songs
so all in all Sigridur has made more than 400
songs on 39 albums, making her one of the most
productive Icelandic musicians ever! And then
there are definately gonna be more albums...
Sigridur is 73 years old, of Danish and German
parentage but has lived in Iceland since 1949. She
lives in central Reykjavik where she makes all her
music in her kitchen, using a keyboard, recording
straight into an United cassette recorder.
Sometimes she sings (in Icelandic or Danish and
German and English even) and sometimes she makes
weird sound effects using whatever tools can be
found at home. She draws and designs all the album
cover herself, takes the master cassette and
artwork to a local CDR maker and hey presto! A new
Sigridur Nielsdottir album is born.
Sigridur has never performed her music live. She
says she's just too shy. This fall an ensamble of
musicians linked to the Kitchen Motors will
perform her music live for the first time. Her
music recently appeared in the critically
acclaimed film Noi Albinoi and two songs (taken
from her albums) will be used on the soundtrack.
"So, what's her music like?" I hear you ask. Well,
it's sincere, naive in parts, sometimes happy,
sometimes sad, sometimes weird, sometimes just
plain undescripable. "What album should I get?", I
hear you ask and to this my answer is: Start
collecting today! Some albums have a theme
(christmas, children's music, meditation etc) but
most are lined up by Sigridur like any other
albums, showing various styles and atmosphere.
