│║ About six years ago, I wouldÆve essentially bought pretty ║ │
│║ much anything Urban breed sang over blind and on-sight. The ║ │
│║ manÆs seemingly limitless vocal talent had been lent to so ║ │
│║ many damn good albums that I thought it was a sure thing. ║ │
│║ But Serious Black put a dent in that strategy, with breedÆs ║ │
│║ vocal talents having been the main thing bolstering ║ │
│║ otherwise vanilla and generic power metal. And the last one ║ │
│║ Magic was a horrific trainwreck of an album, like almost a ║ │
│║ St. Anger for this style û I canÆt even tell you how ║ │
│║ depressing it was to hear that. So I was almost wary to ║ │
│║ even check this new one out. Fortunately, itÆs a comeback ║ │
│║ for breed in my eyes, easily some of his best work in a ║ │
│║ while. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Suite 226 almost doesnÆt even sound like the same band as ║ │
│║ Magic. This is still easy-listening, pop-laced power metal ║ │
│║ with some 80s rock influence, but the writing has taken a ║ │
│║ turn into something much more interesting. The riffs are ║ │
│║ better than they have been for this outfit in the past, ║ │
│║ with opener ôLet Me Goö boasting some rather catchy ║ │
│║ fistfuls of them underneath breedÆs hyper-catchy jaunting ║ │
│║ vocal lines. And the songs are seemingly unafraid to dip ║ │
│║ into some more experimental waters, with tracks like ║ │
│║ ôSolitude Etudeö and the nine-minute title song being ║ │
│║ genuinely complex, interesting songs with gloomier, more ║ │
│║ pensive climes than Serious Black has usually tried for. ║ │
│║ The ballad ôCome Homeö tends to grow on you, too, with its ║ │
│║ tranquil mood concealing a layered melodic performance. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Breed is his typical inimitable self. HeÆs always had such ║ │
│║ a great control over his voice, a natural charisma, and can ║ │
│║ work vocal lines into silky, addictive concoctions that ║ │
│║ will never come out of your head. Part Bruce Dickinson and ║ │
│║ part Mike Howe from Metal Church, heÆs basically eked out ║ │
│║ his own style since Tad Morose all those years ago, and ║ │
│║ itÆs so great to hear him powering out some of his better ║ │
│║ vocal work in the past several years here. ôWhen the Stars ║ │
│║ Are Rightö is a lean, blazing power metal corker, ôCastielö ║ │
│║ sees him reaching for higher-than-usual notes over some ║ │
│║ charging Tad Morose-esque power metal riffing, and ôWay ║ │
│║ Back Homeö is an AOR ear-worm that youÆll be humming for ║ │
│║ weeks. So for fans of breed, this is a must-buy, even ║ │
│║ though he dresses like a stage magician from the 1920s all ║ │
│║ the time now in the music videos. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ I'd love to hear this band just go for the throat with ║ │
│║ aggression, but maybe that isn't really who they are; not ║ │
│║ every band is into that. So chalk this up to a win for ║ │
│║ Serious Black û this is the first time I can actually say ║ │
│║ IÆm looking forward to what theyÆll do next, as more ║ │
│║ complex writing and better overall songs have lent this a ║ │
│║ replay factor that hasnÆt waned for me yet. IÆve played ║ │
│║ this multiple times in the same day, even, and none of the ║ │
│║ songs are bad or even really weak. If youÆre into the ║ │
│║ European school of power metal, or if you like concept ║ │
│║ albums about, I think, guys in mental hospitals, this ║ │
│║ should be on your list. ║ │
