=============================================================================

A little journey to smoothen your mood and moisten your moment,
let this be your escort into internationally influenced electronic
beats in the finest, sweetest of style.

Sweetbeats celebrate our one hundredth release with a compilation of
a special kind. Each member has chosen one track from our past ninety
nine releases. As our theme, each track includes a female voice.

It has been just less that 2 months since the inception of Sweetbeats
as a named group, though the true essence of us stems from a long
history of friends who simply share music. As the mp3 phenomenon
develops, doors open, the music flows, and friends come in...

=============================================================================

To accentuate this compilation each of us offers
their thoughts about their choice of track:

     01 Kosma - Les Promesses d'une Chevelure
        Kosma--Universal-1997-sb (Instinct)

Can we say seductive? The gentle rolling drumbeat, funky organ samples,
string ensemble, and flute work so well together. The feeling I get
when i listen to this song almost makes me wish that my living room's
decor included lava lamps, a shag rug, a disco ball and a hot tub in
     the corner.  ThereÆs not many tunes out there that make you feel sexy;
this tune happens to be one that does. ...and that voice, that ever so
sexy french voice speaking just barely above a whisper. The beauty of
this tune almost makes you cringe with delight. I admit I cannot speak
French. I have no idea what this girl is saying. The fact that I donÆt
understand her makes the song all that much sexier. For all I know, she
could be talking dirty, or she could be insulting me and telling me how
much she hates me. You know what? With a voice and accent like that,
     I couldn't care less what she's saying. --k

     02 Tosca - Natural
        One_Step_Ahead-(vinyl)-1999-sb (Straight Ahead Records)

Anyone familiar with downtempo electronic, knows Richard Dorfmeister,
one half of the legendary K&D. You may also know his other project
Tosca, but you might not know this track, which I think is one of
Tosca's finest. There is a hush of female vocality here, gliding along
in melodic midtempo on high spirits.
Music is in the air - all around us, on its own medium that we tap into.
We dig and dig, searching palates for just the right colour, that
specific sound that makes us say 'yes!'. For those moments that we
capture it, we hear magic.. and we owe all of this to the musician.
Music is so important to me that it is like my food, my nourishment.
I thrive on it, and it thrives on me. --h

03 Statik Sound System - Amazed by you (Aim mix)
        Statik_Sound_System--Remix_Selection-1998-sb

Good music creates an atmosphere when you listen to it, which makes it
deeper and more meaningful than the inputs that went into making it.
Aim's mix of Statik Sound System's - Amazed by You, features everything
that I like in a track -- solid beats you can nod your head to, and
vocals that add to the depth of the music, together creating a positive,
energizing atmosphere. It's a track that you can put on at any time of
day, and regardless of your mood you'll be happy with your choice. --s

04 Arling and Cameron - Gershwin
        Donuts_3-Lazy_Beats_for_Lounge_Lizards-1999-sb (Bolshi)

There are a huge amount of songs that I wanted to put on the sweetbeats
compilation but because it wasn't supposed to be a 40 CD release I was
forced to pick one good track from all the gems out there. One criteria
to recognize a good song is that I get aroused in the same way as when
my girlfriend is stripping. Things that get my dick up, beside viagra
and my girlfriend, are DJ Cam's Mad Blunted Jazz, portishead, massive
attack and from now on this track can put it up as well.
Eventually, after long consideration, Gershwin from Arling and Cameron
was chosen to represent me on the compilation for a couple of reasons.
Although I never had heard of them I fell in love with the song right
away. During this six minute ear orgasm a mighty female voice was
frying my brain while redefining chillin' out while having a party. --g

05 Nicola Conte - Bossa Per Due
        Eighteenth_Street_Lounge--Jet_Society-1999-sb

It was immediately obvious - within the first minute of hearing this
track, that Bossa Per Due would become one of my favourites for times
to come. this music is definitely an international thing- bringing us
closer to all parts of the world. It transports us far away, yet brings
us all together at the same time. Nicola Conte does just that for me.
Listening to this music reminds me of another place, a simpler time.
It could be any place really, but there would be friends and smiles all
around, and life would be wonderful. --a

06 Mo Horizons - Foto Viva
        Mo_Horizons--Come_Touch_the_Sun-1999-sb

*yawn* just waking up from a previous bedroom session here... the
sleeping kind. what oh what does mo'horizons--foto viva mean is the
question. It seems to me it means silence with a voice. what more could
music mean in its truest form. if one artist's expression could
captivate a listener enough where the lyrics and instruments convey
thoughts from one mind to another. mo'horizons can, and do, take their
art to this level in "come touch the sun." in picking "foto viva," i
only hope to open you, the listener, up to the experience i have taken
from this album. enjoy it, and remember that we all contribute in
different ways to art. my contribution is to make you aware. you may
use that knowledge to make a better selection the next time you are
     in my place. --mbj

     07 Attica Blues - 3ree (A Means To Be)
        Attica_Blues--Attica_Blues-1997-sb

411 Videomagazine once did a profile on Chad Fernandez, he was skating
to this beat that was just unbelievable strong. I found out in the
credits that it was a song called "3ree" by Attica Blues. From that
moment on my search began for their album. Nobody in my area had that CD
for sale. So I emailed my sister in Amsterdam and put her on the quest.
She found the CD and sent it to me. My sister r0x! So does this album.
     BUY IT! --hp

     08 Journeyman - Spy
        Ninja_Cuts-Funkungfusion-1998-sb (Ninjatune)

What does he want? where is he going? Those where the first questions
that raised the first time i heard this track. Very low, almost
dissynchronised beat, lower than down echos and then... this voice,
tragically there, majestically there, this voice sampled live from
nowhere that keeps the track together and brings it up, up higher than
up. A vertical audio landscape that works for both opening and closing
my eyes. After a couple of years of intense listening, i found that
this track keeps on asking me, "what do you want ?", "where are you
going ?" and that questions put together, can be asked with a smile
     on my face. --c9

09 Sven Van Hees - Tsunami (inside my soul)
        Sven_Van_Hees--Gemini-1999-sb

Sven is great for those easy late night dosing off experiences.
He makes you feel the now totally. His flowing drumloops and samples
makes you wonder how cavemen liked to chill... Enjoy this sweet like
chocolate taste from Belgium. Peace out to all headz that know the
true meaning of the word GOD: Give Or Die. --o

     10 Lahr - Backyard Rising
        Lahr--Lyrical_Amusement-1999-sb

The buildup of this track has the same atmosphere as most of Massive
Attack's Mezzanine has, the guitars remind me of the KLF's Chill Out
album, both are classics. It's also a track with the least obvious
female vocals in it, as that's mostly not my cup of tea ... Outside of
that, just listen to it, talking about it is just a waste of time. --ch

     11 Anthea - Don't Explain
        Serve_Chilled-1999-sb (hedkandi)

Even though we passed up on releasing the incredible full length effort
by anthea, a few compilations featured her outstanding vocals.
encompassing a spectrum from the helpless danzel in distress to a
hardened diva, anthea's vocals on this track transcend above butter
into the divine state of liquefying butter. basslines remain faint,
allowing her vocals to stand out, and yet maintaining a consistent and
chilled rhythm for the whole four minutes. perfect for the aftermath
of bedroom session, anthea will bring the mood down and calm your
pulsing heart from a pounding throb to a subtle twitch. --ap

=============================================================================

We worked quite a bit on this release, from the basic choice of the
tracks, the covers and our write ups. We really hope you enjoy it.

secret handshakes all round to cool new friends we have met underwater
(who's names i'd like to mention, but won't)

oh and umm: happy winter solstice, merry christmas and safe new year!

=============================================================================

Mp3's are here to improve music, link artists to listeners and not
products to consumers.. Who in hell defined music as a product?

We believe in promotion through exposure. By discussing, sharing, and
introducing quality music to people who may otherwise never be
able to experience what we call the downbeat.

From labels like Pork, Ninjatune, Ubiquity, Mo'Wax, Warp, Hed Kandi,
Instinct, SSR, News, Compost, Mole, OM, Dorado, Tritone etc, etc.

Above all, our finest respects to the artists and their labels.
