Jacob Karlzon was born in J÷nk÷ping in 1970 and has
established himself as one of Sweden's most personal and
skilful pianists.
He has a highly-developed touch and a technique that is
impressive, and he has been favourably compared to pianists
such as Keith Jarrett, Bill Evans and Jan Johansson. After
completing studies at the Malm÷ College of music, he was soon
engaged in a large variety of groups and projects. He has
played and recorded with such well known names as Billy Cobham
(on the CD "North by North-West"). Lina Nyberg (on the CD
"Temper"), Peter Asplund (on the CDs< "Melos" and "Satch As
Such"), Viktoria Tolstoy (on the CD "Blame It On My Youth"),
Bob Berg, Kenny Wheeler, Tim Hagans, Norma Winstone, Silje
Nergaard, Fredrik Lundin, Trine-Lise Vaering, Cµcilie Norby,
Rigmor Gustafsson, Anders Bergcrantz, Cennet J÷nsson etc.
Jacob Karlzon is also a regular member of Tolvan Big Band.
The Jacob Karlzon Trio was formed in 1993. The group has
undertaken a great many concerts and tours and has over the
years developed a unique group-interplay where borderlines
between composed passages and spontaneous improvisation are
often hard to define.
As the title implies, the Jacob Karlzon Trio progressed
forward with the CD "Going Places". (The group's debut-CD
"Take Your Time" was released in 1996). The material - eight
compositions by Jacob Karlzon and two by the trio - is very
varied in character, with many new and exciting sounds. In
addition to piano, bass and drums, there are tracks with
electric piano, Hammond organ, different percussion
instruments and sampled drums. "Inspiration has come equally
as much from, for example, ethnic music and contemporary
art-music as jazz. From free to arranged, from wild to
beautiful...." (Jacob Karlzon) In October 2001 the Jacob
Karlzon Trio recorded the group's latest CD, "Today", which
was released in the spring of 2002 by Prophone Records and
received considerable critical acclaim.
The material on "Today" consists of the trio's personal
interpretations of seven jazz standards, a Swedish hymn -
"Sorgen och glΣdjen" ("Sorrow and Joy") and an original
composition by Karlzon. Throughout the CD "Today" can be heard
the intimate interplay, dynamics and swing achieved by the
three members of the trio, which constitutes the group's
trademarks.
