Storming out of Italy with a cello in one hand and some
programming gear in the other, Modern Institute is the
chosen appellation of Teho Teardo and Martina Bertoni - one
of whom (Teho) is a proper knob-on composer/sound designer
who has worked with the likes of Rothko, Lydia Lunch and,
ahem, Placebo. Predisposed to make grandstanding sonic
statements, the music on 'Excellent Swimmer' has a tendency
to soar skywards at the merest suggestion - with
somersaulting strings acting as a nice counterpoint to the
more textured and gravely electronica.
Opening with the 'Ecm Haircuts' and closing 45 minutes
later through 'Me Neither', there is not a second of
'Excellent Swimmer' that couldn't have been released
anytime in the past decade. Yet whilst this might suggest a
dearth of ideas, it instead gives Bertonia and Teho the
opportunity to ignore prevailing winds and sail alongside
Gorodisch into the Instrumentronica ocean. With particular
highlights including the chopped vocals and cello of
'International Rustic', the fragile beats of 'Flaka', and
the piano-led 'Two Hours Without Ego', Modern Institute
have crafted an album which wraps a cutting-edge electronic
husk around a traditional heart with considerable aplomb.
