Much has been made of multi-instrumentalist Yann
Encre in the last few months, after his monumental
2004 album 'Flux' and then an acclaimed tour with
Moteer's Manyfingers and the multi-talented Matt
Elliott (aka Third Eye Foundation) people have begun
to take notice of his unique Gallic charms. On this
EP, his first for Mitchell Akiyama's Intr Version
imprint, he takes folk instruments (mainly the
beautifully evocative Kora) and overlays them, plays
them together, chops and edits them - leaving us with
a beautifully odd sound which comes across like Clogs
produced by Andy Jenkinson. Following the complex
structures of the opening piece, track 2 delivers a
swooping Max Richter-esque cello draped melancholy
while the third blends all this instrumentation and
musicality with an intricate construction and hook to
create something totally otherworldly and utterly
charming. Off on an instrumental tangent and sounding
much unlike anything else, this is for our money the
best release yet on this esteemed label - a big,
hearty recommendation. - boomkat
