Release Notes:
I'm sure Golden's earnest take on long-hair'd 70s boogie-rock and florid
guitar-duelling prog-rock comes loaded with a whole bunch of spot-on references
to a whole bunch of specific songs from their record collections. Ones that only
other ardent admirers of the most tasteless remnants of chops-rock would be able
to pick. If you're to go by their music, you'd imagine Golden as the kind of
cats who collect Yes records, who actually would sit down and listen to the
Steve Miller Band, and who harbour the romantic dream of issuing an Emerson Lake
& Palmer-styled live triple-album. Now on their fourth record, Golden have only
recently managed to overcome side-project status and make like any kind of
permanent outfit, as their members normally do time in combos like Mars Volta
and Trans Am. TA being a good frame of reference, here, given that that crew
have long been beholden to making comic knock-offs of various styleless styles
of past rock. But, while Trans Am do this wholly with irony, it seems with
Golden that the love is much more ardent. After getting all hot and sweaty on
their last disc, 2000's Golden Summer, the weather report, this time, calls for
much cooler climes; the band effecting an air of evening sophistication as they
whip out their groove-strutting theme-numbers Feel This Flow and Goldenization,
peel out into a gentle moonlit romance Ma Petite Est MariΘe, and go wild long
into the night flaunting their chops on Vitamin G, which features poly-time-sig
movements, hot hammond bashing, and numerous guitar-duelling guitar-solos. The
only question, is, without the snide tones of irony, are the same kids who
snicker knowingly to Trans Am, Oxes, or The Fucking Champs going to like such
muso earnestness? And, on the other side of the coin, are the Golden boys' chops
hot enough to impress actual earnest musos?
