Pauliina Lerche was born in Raakkyla, the very cradle of
Karelian traditional music. Starting with violin at the age of
four, she really got into folk music five years later when she
joined the original line-up of Varttina. Pauliina performed on
the group's first two albums.
Lerche, too, found her way to the Sibelius Academy,
specialising in 5-row accordion. She formed the group Mimmit
in 1993, and joined Burlakat the following year. A versatile
musician, Pauliina also enjoys playing in the band of the
popular actor/singer Vesa-Matti Loiri.
Lerche uses music from other traditions and gently mixes them
in with Karelian folk music. This can be heard on her first
solo album "Katrilli" where Finnish instruments are teamed up
with guitar, electronic keyboards and even flavours from
India, but never overshadowing the main theme of the album,
high-spirited Karelian music.
The Indian influences are even more apparent with Lerche's new
group Kriay, which features an Indian vocalist as well as a
percussionist playing tabla and santoor. Their debut album
will be released in 2005.
