Renowned for their international 1964 Top Five hit "Have I The Right", The
Honeycombs possessed a manic and impassioned edge, even by the standards of
the British Invasion. Their sound was a strange combination of influences:
Alan Ward's ringing, stinging lead guitar, Honey Lantree's larger-than-life
drumming, Dennis D'Ell's quavering vocals, Martin Murray's rhythm guitar,
and John Lantree's bass combined to mesmerizing effect. The band's singles
and albums were produced by the legendary Joe Meek, who used all of his
studio tricks - including ghostly organ and compression that hits the
listener like a punch in the chest - to give The Honeycombs an unmistakable
style.
A huge collection of work by The Honeycombs a group from the Brit Invasion
generation who may well be best remembered for having an excellent female
drummer - but one who can also come up with the kind of catchy, tuneful
songs that easily match the best work of their contemporaries too! The
tunes are short, groovy, and have a great blend of Brit-styled vocals and
jaunty guitars - all driven nicely the the drums of Honey Lantree - a
player whose strengths on these tracks is way more than just a gimmick!
The set features everything the group recorded for Pye Records in the 60s -
the albums "The Honeycombs" and "All Systems Go" , plus the Japanese-only
Honeycombs "In Tokyo" - all newly remastered - plus a huge amount of
singles and other material too - which makes for a whopping 78 tracks in
the box set.
