│║ While originality is undoubtedly at a premium in the modern ║ │
│║ melodic death metal scene, a galvanized, sincere ║ │
│║ performance can make a big difference if it is applied ║ │
│║ correctly. Frosttide makes no secret of who their ║ │
│║ inspirations are, a list that includes genre mainstays such ║ │
│║ as Wintersun and early-era Ensiferum. The lack of restraint ║ │
│║ is somewhat endearing in this case, as this relative group ║ │
│║ of newcomers prove they have the chops to hang with some of ║ │
│║ the acts they so shamelessly adore. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ There is an elegance to the leadwork that comes off as a ║ │
│║ slightly more restrained version of MΣenpΣΣ. This yields ║ │
│║ high returns in Frosttide's case as melodic, folk-infused ║ │
│║ passages give way to Munoz's bombastic synth arrangements. ║ │
│║ A more unusual decision is the use of a more ║ │
│║ classic-sounding, overdriven guitar tone that is acerbic ║ │
│║ yet forgiving during more intense tremolo sections. Some of ║ │
│║ the lead melodies remind me of Suidakra, which from a ║ │
│║ melodic standpoint is a high honor. "Quest for Glory" ║ │
│║ features stop-start riffs that open up into more enthused, ║ │
│║ bouncy leads as the keyboards later join in and snatch the ║ │
│║ melodic reins from the guitars. This one features a neat ║ │
│║ solo section that has both Patinen and Munoz trading off ║ │
│║ memorable scale rules. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ The keyboards naturally deserve special mention. "No ║ │
│║ Turning Back" is just brimming in triumphant overtones, ║ │
│║ almost entirely courtesy of Munoz's novel compositions. He ║ │
│║ is almost always fluttering around in a major key, ║ │
│║ delivering uplifting and sticky refrains at a torrid pace. ║ │
│║ For the most potent individual example, skip to the "Raise ║ │
│║ your sword, fight with us" section and revel in the ║ │
│║ glorious soundscapes he creates. The short instrumental ║ │
│║ "Dawn of Despair" reminds me of Ensiferum's "Ferrum ║ │
│║ Aeternum" as far as the melodies and approach are ║ │
│║ concerned. "Unwritten (Engraved in the Stars)" is the ║ │
│║ requisite epic, progressive number, featuring a multitude ║ │
│║ of movements and songwriting styles. The more deliberate, ║ │
│║ ascending riffs evoke a tense, foreboding atmosphere that ║ │
│║ leaves a searing impact on the listener. The whole ordeal ║ │
│║ comes off as a less bloated, more digestible Wintersun. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ While I feel like I am splitting hairs, I have to mention ║ │
│║ some production imbalances. There are moments where the ║ │
│║ keyboards wash over the mix and swallow up the guitars and ║ │
│║ vocals. Patinen's guttural roars are also mixed a bit too ║ │
│║ upfront for my taste. His intonation is passable, but if ║ │
│║ there is a liability on Awakening it is the vocals. The ║ │
│║ instrumental opener "Winter's Call" is passable for what it ║ │
│║ is, but lacks the melodic swagger that is delivered later ║ │
│║ on in the procession. "Ruins of Defeat" is also so-so, ║ │
│║ ending up as a bit of an afterthought after the listener ║ │
│║ digests all that Frosttide has to offer here. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ It isn't original by any stretch, but who really cares at ║ │
│║ the end of the day? Upcoming bands like Frosttide give the ║ │
│║ genre stalwarts some competition and a reason to keep ║ │
│║ upping the ante. We as listeners benefit from the end ║ │
│║ result either way. ║ │
