::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: RELEASE NOTES ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
::|»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»|::
::| |::
::| Simon Harris was born in London in 1962 and discovered DJ'ing when he |::
::| was given a hi-fi system by his parents for his 13th birthday, while |::
::| making compilation cassettes of his favourite records he discovered the |::
::| creative possibilities of using the pause control. Many tapes later in |::
::| 1976 Simon discovered twin turntables and a mixer and he was hooked, so |::
::| he began DJ'ing in his spare time. |::
::| |::
::| When he was still in school in 1978 he read about a hospital radio |::
::| station 'Radio Forest' in the local newspaper and they were looking for |::
::| presenters, so Simon attended a DJ training course in London and |::
::| presented Radio Forest with a demo and was given his own show. A year |::
::| later after leaving school Simon headed for London's Tottenham Court |::
::| Road and was employed by 'REW' selling professional audio equipment. |::
::| Most of the staff would bring in their own mix tapes to demonstrate the |::
::| gear but Simon would always try to out mix everyone else by spending |::
::| hours on the tapes at home. The manager of the store was Les Adams (LA |::
::| Mix) and one day he asked Simon to collect his records from nearby |::
::| 'Groove Records', it was then that Simon discovered imported 12 inch |::
::| singles from the USA when he bought his first import 12 inch û Sister |::
::| Sledge 'He's the greatest Dancer' û from then on Simon would spend all |::
::| his money on 12 inch singles. |::
::| |::
::| Simon was working at REW during the day and DJ'ing at the weekends, |::
::| weddings, barmitzvahs, anywhere he could mix his music with his DJ |::
::| partner from Radio Forest, Stuart Gaylor. Simon left REW and went to |::
::| work at electronic retailer 'Dixons' after which Stuart and Simon |::
::| decided to make a full time career DJ'ing (to the horror of Stuart's |::
::| mother). The pair started 'Hylites' In 1980 and Simon bought a pair of |::
::| Technics SL1200 turntables and became deeply involved in the almost |::
::| unheard of art of mixing. After trying unsuccessfully to increase the |::
::| amount of wedding bookings, Stuart and Simon decided to start promoting |::
::| their own nights in local clubs by booking well known DJ's from Capital |::
::| Radio. After a couple of years with many successful packed clubs, it |::
::| was time to move on and Simon met DJ Froggy who was also involved in |::
::| mixing after a trip to the 'Paradise garage' where he saw Larry Levan |::
::| (all time greatest DJ). In 1982 Simon's friend John Marshall managed to |::
::| secure Simon a DJ residency at one of London's top clubs, 'Legends'. It |::
::| was here that Simon worked solidly on his DJ and mixing skills and also |::
::| spent his time DJ'ing in other London clubs (ie: the newly opened |::
::| 'Camden Palace' with "Visage's Rusty Egan) and also with exclusive |::
::| 'remixes' for Capital Radio shows. One night at Legends, Radio |::
::| Luxemburg DJ Tony Prince explained his plans for starting DMC (now the |::
::| world's largest DJ organisation) to Simon and asked him to be one of |::
::| the first DMC remixers. Simon moved on from Legends in 1983 and opened |::
::| his own dedicated DJ studio in East London and continued to DJ at |::
::| various clubs. In 1984 Simon entered and won a mixing competition on |::
::| Capital Radio. |::
::| |::
::| Simon worked with DMC for a couple of years until Froggy suggested |::
::| forming a partnership and offered his record company and Radio One |::
::| contacts as incentive. This worked well and Froggy and Simon would |::
::| create mixes, then give them exclusively to Capital and Radio One DJ's |::
::| then contact the record companies and persuade them to release the |::
::| mixes because of the radio airplay. In 1985 Froggy introduced Simon to |::
::| a manager he had found called Chris France. Chris is still Simon's long |::
::| time business partner. The same year, Simon and Froggy found a 24 track |::
::| master tape that had been thrown away, it turned out to be the master |::
::| of 'You to me are everything' by 'The Real Thing' (UK pop#1 in 1976). |::
::| Simon and Froggy were convinced that they could do a great mix of this |::
::| track, so Chris persuaded the owner of the song (PRT) to pay for some |::
::| studio time to give it a try. The agreement was that the maximum fee |::
::| that Simon and Froggy (and KC who was working with Froggy at the time) |::
::| would receive would be L200. The team went into the studio and remixed |::
::| the track, it was released and went to #3 in the UK pop charts, Froggy, |::
::| Simon and KC were paid only L200. It was this event that prompted them |::
::| to start their own label. Froggy's friend Morgan Khan (Streetwave) |::
::| offered a label deal and the name 'Music of Life' was decided while |::
::| listening to one of the tracks they wanted to license, 'Music of Life' |::
::| by Cerrone. |::
::| |::
::| Just after starting Music of Life, Froggy decided at leave to persue |::
::| other interests including his own show on Capital Radio, then KC |::
::| decided to follow, leaving just Simon and Chris. Morgan's Streetwave |::
::| company then went into receivership leaving Music of Life with no |::
::| distribution. Chris approached Steve Mason at Pinnacle who was happy to |::
::| offer some working capital and a distribution deal, so Music of Life |::
::| moved to offices in London's Soho and started releasing UK rap music, |::
::| something that no other label was supporting at the time. This was |::
::| because Simon was a big fan of rap music and was convinced that there |::
::| was no real secret to the sound coming out of New York at the time, so |::
::| Simon found some talented London artists (Demon Boyz, MC Duke, |::
::| Einstein, Asher D & Daddy Freddy) and began producing them in his home |::
::| 16 track studio. Over the next several years Music of Life would become |::
::| firmly established as the key UK rap label and would even license and |::
::| release UK rap music to New York labels including Profile (Run DMC) and |::
::| Next Plateau (Salt N' Pepa). |::
::| |::
::| Simon also produced a series of albums designed for DJ's, collections |::
::| of break beats, samples and noises which he used on his own remixes and |::
::| productions, Simon decided to share his library with other DJ's and |::
::| producers and the 'Beats Breaks and Scratches' series was released in |::
::| 1986 and continued to 12 volumes which DJ's continue to use in 2002. At |::
::| this point Simon was also producing a huge amount of jingles, |::
::| commercials and voice over for pirate radio station 'Kiss FM', Capital |::
::| Radio and Radio One. |::
::| |::
::| In 1987 Pete Tong (London Records) asked Simon to bring him anything he |::
::| thought that London could release that maybe wouldn't be suitable for |::
::| Music of Life, after Pete liked released one of Simon's productions (a |::
::| rap version of Michael Jackson's 'Bad' called 'Bad on the Mic' |::
::| featuring Music of Life's Demon Boyz) Simon would then take him an |::
::| experimental track he had been playing around with while trying to come |::
::| up with an acid house track. The track was 'Bass (how low can you go?)' |::
::| and Tong was convinced that it had great potential. Simon agreed to |::
::| give it to him, in fact he couldn't understand why Tong wanted it, but |::
::| he showed why he was just about the best A&R man in the UK when 'Bass' |::
::| started getting a huge reaction then went into the UK pop charts in |::
::| 1988. Simon ended up appearing on 'Top of the Pops' and the track went |::
::| to #11 UK pop and when it was released in the USA, #1 on the Billboard |::
::| dance track. An album called 'Bass!' followed and several more single |::
::| releases before Simon decided to move back to producing other artists |::
::| for the next several years, in fact at this point Simon also decided to |::
::| quit live DJ work, a decision originally prompted by the way that |::
::| security staff were controlling the running of clubs. |::
::| |::
::| Music of Life would continue to break new ground in dance music, |::
::| following on from the first mixture of hip hop and raga several years |::
::| earlier (Asher D & Daddy Freddy's 'Ragamuffin Hip Hop') Simon would go |::
::| on to mix ragga and house music with Daddy Freddy's 'Ragga House', |::
::| until Simon would produce Music of Life's first UK chart hit |::
::| 'Supermarioland' by Ambassadors of Funk in 1992 which went to #6 UK |::
::| pop. Simon and Chris went to Japan to meet Shiguru Miyomoto at Nintendo |::
::| (Mario's creator) to gain approval to make a follow up album. Music of |::
::| Life would also handle marketing on behalf of Edel (Germany) resulting |::
::| in a UK pop#1 for Prince with 'The most beautiful girl in the world', |::
::| Chris France placed the record at the top of the charts and Simon |::
::| Harris produced the 12 inch dance mix. |::
::| |::
::| In 1995 Simon bought a new PC and discovered the internet which has |::
::| continued to dominate his life ever since turning him into an obsessive |::
::| emailer and computer junkie, Simon went on to take over many previously |::
::| impossible tasks, such as sleeve design, website production and |::
::| eventually all production tasks. Also in 1995 Music of Life would work |::
::| with Australian celebrity Rolf Harris with a version of 'Bohemian |::
::| Rhapsody' and later Samantha Fox and even The Nolan Sisters. Having |::
::| produced several music videos (Daddy Freddy's 'Pain Killa' in LA, and |::
::| Joyce Simms 'Come into my Life' in New York) Simon also decided to |::
::| produce a full length TV documentary on rap superstars 'Run DMC', the |::
::| show was completed and broadcast on MTV. The following year Simon |::
::| produced a documentary on remixers featuring his old friends, Paul |::
::| Oakenfold, Norman Cook, David Morales, Frankie Knuckles, Todd Terry and |::
::| more. |::
::| |::
::| Simon would become more involved in media production over the next |::
::| several years, was an early adopter of DVD, installed a large arsenal |::
::| of medial production tools in his ever expanding studio, including |::
::| Silicon Graphics, Avid and Apple hardware and a huge amount of the |::
::| latest software for everything from virtual recording studio to on-line |::
::| digital television production to DVD authoring. Simon would produce |::
::| many DVD titles and launch several successful DVD labels with thousands |::
::| of DVD's sold. |::
::| |::
::| In recent years Simon has produced many websites ranging from |::
::| promotional, music, corporate to e-commerce and now runs his own |::
::| hosting service with dedicated servers in the UK and USA, has |::
::| configured and supported corporate email and network services, started |::
::| his own web company selling hard to find electronics items and |::
::| continued to produce dance music. |::
::| |::
::| The LP of this album initialy appeared in 1990 on BCM Records (BCM |::
::| 33429), Germany and later in 1996 the CD version was released by SVP |::
::| records, including some extra tracks/remixes. |::
::| |::
