│║ To commemorate the tenth anniversary of the ║ │
│║ passing and honor the legacy of iconic vocalist ║ │
│║ Ronnie James Dio, BMG Records have reissued ║ │
│║ DioÆs long out-of-print 1996-2004 studio albums ║ │
│║ Angry Machines (1996), Magica (2000), Killing ║ │
│║ The Dragon (2002), and Master Of The Moon ║ │
│║ (2004). ║ │
│║ ItÆs interesting coming back to these four ║ │
│║ albums after so many years with fresh ears. As ║ │
│║ fans will tell you those first four Dio albums ║ │
│║ were magical from æHoly DiverÆ to æDream EvilÆ ║ │
│║ and the two that followed æLock Up The WolvesÆ ║ │
│║ and æStrange HighwaysÆ get a few mixed reviews ║ │
│║ but this collection from 1996 û 2004 are really ║ │
│║ the overlooked era of the band what with Dio ║ │
│║ returning to Black Sabbath in 1992 with Vinny ║ │
│║ Appice for æDehuminizerÆ they make up the lat ║ │
│║ recordings of the band. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ These final four studio albums are in truth a ║ │
│║ mixed bag. If IÆm honest I always saw æStrange ║ │
│║ HighwaysÆ as an inferior yet musically similar ║ │
│║ take on the ground that both æLock Up The ║ │
│║ WolvesÆ and æDehuminizerÆ to a degree trod. ItÆs ║ │
│║ a world away from those first four albums, ║ │
│║ chasing as it does a sound that really doesnÆt ║ │
│║ suit RonnieÆs voice (or writing style?). Now ║ │
│║ whilst not quite the peak of MetalÆs mid-90Æs ║ │
│║ morass when the old guard still didnÆt quite ║ │
│║ know what to do with themselves four years after ║ │
│║ Grunge, itÆs not cohesive at all. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ ANGRY MACHINES (1996) ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ æStrange HighwaysÆ before it had tried ║ │
│║ unsuccessfully to chase prevailing trends ║ │
│║ without much luck and æAngry MachinesÆ just ║ │
│║ seems to venture further down the rabbit-hole. ║ │
│║ In truth opener æInstitutional ManÆ isnÆt bad ║ │
│║ and it does have a cool solo; and the upbeat ║ │
│║ æDonÆt Tell the KidsÆ is nice and like æHunter ║ │
│║ of the HeartÆ is saved partly by the bass-line ║ │
│║ and some inspired speedy guitars from Gus G. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Interestingly for me at least its the tracks I ║ │
│║ largely forgot that fare quite well and whilst ║ │
│║ there are a few duffers like æBackÆ and æBig ║ │
│║ SisterÆ (nice concept forgettable song) tracks ║ │
│║ like the brooding doom-laden æStay Out of My ║ │
│║ MindÆ are quite en-vogue in 2020 again.And after ║ │
│║ possibly years without hearing them I actually ║ │
│║ find æEvery Sunday, double MondayÆ and æGolden ║ │
│║ RulesÆ hitting the spot. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ The one huge song here though is the closing ║ │
│║ track æThis Is Your LifeÆ a Queen-like ballad ║ │
│║ with voice and piano that sees Ronnie on the ║ │
│║ absolute top of his game, itÆs a song strangely ║ │
│║ out of place and time here and perhaps ║ │
│║ underlines what most bands should have been ║ │
│║ doing instead of chasing trends û producing ║ │
│║ timeless, simple, stunning music. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ These releases of course have bonus tracks and ║ │
│║ æAngry MachinesÆ comes with the best of all û ║ │
│║ twelve live tracks from the æAngry MachinesÆ ║ │
│║ tour in 1997. ItÆs a set that tellingly recalls ║ │
│║ far more of the past than the present û only ║ │
│║ opener æJesus Mary and The Holy GhostÆ from ║ │
│║ Æ93Æs æStrange HighwaysÆ makes it from recent ║ │
│║ albums along with æDouble MondayÆ and æHunter ║ │
│║ of the HeartÆ come from Angry Machines released ║ │
│║ the year before in 1996. The rest is a ║ │
│║ combination of classic Dio, Rainbow and Black ║ │
│║ Sabbath. IÆd honesty but this one just for the ║ │
│║ live set and æThis Is Your LifeÆ! ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ ║ │

│║ ║ │
│║ Ronnie, Tracy, Jeff, and Vinnie unleashed ║ │
│║ Strange Highways upon us in 1994, and then ║ │
│║ totally caught the metal world off guard yet ║ │
│║ again with ANGRY FUCKING MACHINES in 1996. ║ │
│║ People slag bands all the time for releasing the ║ │
│║ same album over and over, and people slag bands ║ │
│║ for radically changing their style. Well slag ║ │
│║ this one, because for what this album was ║ │
│║ intended to do...it worked. Awkward sound all ║ │
│║ across the board, dissonant riffs, random ║ │
│║ baroque symphonic pieces, and confusing social ║ │
│║ commentary! Its probably the only piece of ║ │
│║ 'musical art' that I value as an artful ║ │
│║ expression. ║ │
│║ "Institutional Man" is great and connects itself ║ │
│║ to Strange Highways very well. "Don't Tell The ║ │
│║ Kids" is as cynical as they come, and "Black" is ║ │
│║ pretty catchy albeit annoying. That's probably ║ │
│║ the worst song on the album. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ "Hunter Of The Heart" is pretty good, and the ║ │
│║ most accessible track on the album, but stuff ║ │
│║ like "Stay Outta My Mind," "Big Sister," and ║ │
│║ "Double Monday" keep me coming back because I ║ │
│║ still don't fucking understand the songs. But it ║ │
│║ just works, like "Golden Rules" flows through ║ │
│║ clean riffing, disjointed bridges, dio hooks, ║ │
│║ and screwed up solos....all with a very focused ║ │
│║ message. Whether you get it or not, the album is ║ │
│║ making a statement. "Dying In America" is ║ │
│║ brooding and fun, while "God Hates Heavy Metal" ║ │
│║ chugs pretty nicely. The ballad "This Is Your ║ │
│║ Life" is just damn beautiful and an excellent ║ │
│║ closer. I even quoted the song in my high school ║ │
│║ yearbook. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Yeah yeah yeah, its not classic dio. Oh no!!! He ║ │
│║ definitely didn't sell out, but still tried a ║ │
│║ new direction. And I like this more than Magica ║ │
│║ or Lock Up The Wolves. Great release that ║ │
│║ DOESN'T get its due respect. ║ │
