│║ A historical background is much needed on a band like Quiet ║ │
│║ Riot, as nobody seems to have a grasp on this band. The ║ │
│║ first two records seem like they have either just been ║ │
│║ forgotten and abandoned by people who grew up in the '80s, ║ │
│║ and never even looked at by metal fans of this day in age. ║ │
│║ Let's get something strait. I just saw Quiet Riot last ║ │
│║ weekend at M3 Rock Fest, and many were saying that their ║ │
│║ drummer is the only original member left, that being ║ │
│║ Frankie Banali. That is false, as there are in fact NO ║ │
│║ original members of them left, because the drummer on the ║ │
│║ this record, Quiet Riot and the next one, Quiet Riot II was ║ │
│║ in fact Drew Forsyth. So what they meant to say, is Frankie ║ │
│║ is the only member since Metal Health in 1983. So it's like ║ │
│║ every fucking person just skipped these albums, and they ║ │
│║ are absolute masterpieces that nobody knows about. The fact ║ │
│║ that they are just ignored leaves me breathless (I hope at ║ │
│║ least somebody understands that pun). Another note, this is ║ │
│║ one of the two albums that legendary guitarist Randy Rhoads ║ │
│║ played on, long before he joined Ozzy Osbourne. Yes, Kevin ║ │
│║ DuBrow is the vocalist here in good ol' 1977, and he sounds ║ │
│║ absolutely incredible. It's just before his vocals seemed ║ │
│║ so amplified and energetic on the bands third release. One ║ │
│║ last note, this is NOT the atrocity released in 1988 known ║ │
│║ as QR with a different vocalist. Even though the album ║ │
│║ title is basically the same (probably out of sheer ║ │
│║ laziness), it's a totally different release, and way better ║ │
│║ at that. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ So, with my historical rant being over, I can actually get ║ │
│║ down to the music. As I mentioned, the vocals are somewhat ║ │
│║ different. They are still the high pitched, raspy output ║ │
│║ vocals that we hear from DuBrow on the albums in the '80s. ║ │
│║ But they aren't as energetic as they seem to be on the ║ │
│║ later albums. It's better though, because he focuses much ║ │
│║ more on melody and hitting the notes really well rather ║ │
│║ trying to sound like a more harsh sounding metal frontman ║ │
│║ with an intimidating image. Where most fans would compare ║ │
│║ it to the likes of Twisted Sister, Cinderella, or even ║ │
│║ Dokken, this record has such a different approach, and I ║ │
│║ would compare it more to bands like Scorpions, Budgie, ║ │
│║ Armored Saint, or Deep Purple. In other words, the more ║ │
│║ calm and melodic vocal work mixed with less intensified ║ │
│║ instrumentation gives it that really early heavy metal ║ │
│║ sound. The sound before metal was taken over by hair bands ║ │
│║ or the thrash metal movement (and for this band ║ │
│║ specifically, it would take the hair band route). ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Along with the vocals, the song structure is also superior, ║ │
│║ because while the songs may not always be as catchy, they ║ │
│║ are certainly better written and more concise. Nothing on ║ │
│║ here gets repetitive at all, nor sounds cheesy, unlike on ║ │
│║ the '80s records. Every song sounds like it took some time ║ │
│║ to write, and wasn't written by a group of people working ║ │
│║ for a record company. The best tracks are by far the ║ │
│║ beginning and the end ones, that being "It's Not So Funny" ║ │
│║ (released as a single), and "Demolition Derby". While still ║ │
│║ having a catchy beat and positive vibe, they cease to have ║ │
│║ any pop influence and keep the listener interested by every ║ │
│║ means. Now, this band has always been notorious for covers, ║ │
│║ especially by Slade as everyone knows. But here, they ║ │
│║ covered Small Faces and The Dave Clark Five, with '70s ║ │
│║ metal twists, and rather making the covers a hit, it just ║ │
│║ helped add to the magnificent substance of the album. Other ║ │
│║ standout tracks are "Mommy's Little Angels" and "Get Your ║ │
│║ Kicks". But not one track leaves me disappointed. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ If Randy Rhoads is on guitar, then it's a given that it's ║ │
│║ going to be stellar. His riff work flows perfectly and ║ │
│║ keeps an exceptional pace as he chugs along with DuBrow's ║ │
│║ vocals, with no hard edge needed to make it sound well. ║ │
│║ Although he may not have reached the complexity he reached ║ │
│║ in his career with Ozzy, it's still magnificent. For this ║ │
│║ kind of music, I hardly even think that's necessary. His ║ │
│║ solos are less shredding and more melody to overlay the ║ │
│║ drum and basslines. Although there still is shredding, my ║ │
│║ favorite guitar piece here is the solo on "Get Your Kicks", ║ │
│║ as it's more calm and melodic rather all over the board ║ │
│║ shredding. It's fair to say that it uses a similar style to ║ │
│║ Ritchie Blackmore. The bass on here is very audible and has ║ │
│║ some ingenious lines that would die out after the sophomore ║ │
│║ release. You can really feel it if you play it on big ║ │
│║ speakers, and it's the greatest way to back up the guitar ║ │
│║ work. The drums aren't nearly as hard and ferocious as one ║ │
│║ would expect, but as I keep saying, that's not needed for ║ │
│║ this kind of music. None of the extreme metal attributes ║ │
│║ are present, yet it's still superior. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ I'll be honest, Quiet Riot is one of my favorite metal ║ │
│║ bands, and though it sounds like I was hating on Metal ║ │
│║ Health, Condition Critical and QR III, that was not my ║ │
│║ intention. I love all three of those albums as well, it ║ │
│║ just bothers the shit out of me that these first two ║ │
│║ records are overlooked and forgotten about. I just wanted ║ │
│║ to get the word out there, correct some misconceptions, and ║ │
│║ give an overview of what this offers. So here's an ║ │
│║ opportunity for everyone to check them out. If you're a fan ║ │
│║ of the band, here's an opportunity to expand your ║ │
│║ collection of them. If not, perhaps you'll like this ║ │
│║ better, since it's far different from the Quiet Riot that ║ │
│║ everybody is familiar with. So please, take my word for it, ║ │
│║ and give this gem a shot. You won't regret it. ║ │
