On 6 February 2006, Cornershop release Wop The Groove (Rough Trade Records), the
title track for this film. There's no beating around the bush with this one, a
quality track with a heavy duty riff, featuring Rowetta (ex Happy Mondays) on
top form û written & produced by Tjinder Singh, also known as the national debt
- recorded at Sassi P. Studio, Vatican City. The Factory Records stable have
always given solid support to the Cornershop firmament, and it was this
connection that led to this collaboration.
Cornershop are a band that have lasted far beyond the length of time I expected
them to, I have to be honest.
When they released Brimful Of Asha with a little help from Norman Cook and the
album When I Was Born For The 7th Time hit the upper end of the chart thinks
looked good for them.
Be it through choice or just how things worked out, they didn't really
capitalise on that success and seemed to retreat into their shell after that.
The good news though is that despite that they've continued to release quality
records in a number of guises.
The latest single Wop The Groove, is a funk fuelled guitar track that features
the mighty vocals of Rowettta, our younger readers will probably know her from X
Factor, our older readers will almost certainly remember her from her stints
with the Happy Mondays.
Which is a nice link because the track is only really missing Shaun Ryders vocal
from it to be Yes Please era Mondays. In some peoples eyes that would be a bad
thing but as Sunshine and Love is my favourite track by them it hits the right
note with me.
The b-side is a strange little affair, spoken word information about the
problems you might experience with cassettes over a Lemon Jelly style backdrop,
strangely I really like it!
