Second Story Man was born in 1998 from the ashes of the Louisville bands Itch
House (Carrie Neumayer and Evan Bailey were members) and The Flats (Evan Bailey
and Jeremy Irvin were members). Second Story Man began as a three piece, with
all members sharing the songwriting duties. Stories, a split EP, was recorded
with friends and fellow Louisvillians, The Helgeson Story, in 1999. A fourth
member and songwriter, Kelly Scullin, was added in 2000. Under that lineup,
Second Story Man released an EP, Weddings, Parties, Sympathy, on Jeremy Irvin's
own Landmark Recordings label, and toured the East Coast and Midwest
extensively. In 2002, Second Story Man was awarded a grant from the Kentucky
Foundation for Women to record, manufacture, and distribute a full-length album.
That album, Pins and Needles, carved out a signature sound featuring delicate
vocal interplay and four-part vocal harmonies over dynamic and serpentine song
structures. Pins and Needles was released to rave reviews and received airplay
on college and independent radio stations in Louisville, Lexington, Los Angeles,
Boston, New York, Austin, Portland, Seattle, and Chicago. Second Story Man
toured the Eastern half of the country in support of Pins and Needles, opening
for bands like Sebadoh, Victory at Sea, The Gossip, VHS or Beta, My Morning
Jacket, the Faint, and Rainer Maria. In 2004, Kelly Scullin left the band and
was replaced later in the year by Justin Davis. This recent evolution finds
Second Story Man creating their strongest and most consistent work to date. An
upcoming EP has been recorded and a release date is slated for 2006.
