Not, you'll undoubtedly be pleased to hear (and if
you're not hang your head in shame!) an album
tie-in to the Final Fantasy games franchise, but
rather the debut LP from Owen Pallett : string
arranger for the Arcade Fire, guitarist/vocalist
from Les Mouches, and member of (deep breath
people) Internet, Picastro, The Jim Gutherie Band,
Hidden Cameras and King Tut. Phew. Comprised
solely of Pallett, his violin and a trusty looping
pedal, 'Has A Good Home' is choc-a-bloc with
catchy melodies and melancholy optimism that snags
the ear and refuses to let go. Opening with a Deep
Heat violin part, first track 'None Of You Will
Ever See A Penny' rubs gorgeous multi-tracked
vocals against a tale of posthumous revenge that
brings to mind Badly Drawn Boy in that sun blushed
period just after he discovered strings but before
he went shit. Probably a first for these pages,
'This Is The Dream Of Win and Regine' demands a
comparison with everyone's favourite bachelor boy
Cliff Richard (specifically 'Wired For Sound'),
but don't let that put you off, as Pallett
concocts a Quixotic blend of elements which can't
do anything other than please. Elsewhere, 'The
Chronicles Of Sarnia' sounds very much like the
Arcade Fire, 'Adventure.exe' is an imaginary
mash-up between the Umpalumpas and Belle &
Sebastian, whilst 'An Arrow in the Side Of Final
Fantasy' manages to take the violin part from my
most loathed song of all time ('Young at Heart' by
The Bluebells...) and transform it into something
precious.
