ASAHI was an orchestral indie rock band from seattle,
washington. formed in 2001, the ensemble at points included up
to seven members. they released their debut album "head above
water" in late 2002 on the micro-imprint west of january. it
was received warmly in seattle and beyond, garnering glowing
reviews and favorable comparisons to low, jeff buckley, and
ida. the album eventually reached number 15 on the stranger's
local music charts, and was placed on regular rotation on the
respected radio station kexp, a feat unheard of for a band
with little to no label support. they played at the first
annual sound off! competition at the experience music project,
as well as the capitol hill block party. after several
successful tours of the west coast and the midwest, asahi
released a split ep with outside alcatraz. in july of 2004,
"head above water" was rereleased in japan on the label &
records, home to bands such as her space holiday, american
analog set, and +/-. despite their success, personal
differences and the stress of recording their follow up album
led to the band's demise in early 2005.

Joel played a double kick drum in tenth grade, Tomo was born
singing, and Greg went on a pilgrimage to Mike Watt's house
when he was only three. Somewhere along the way to this band,
though, outside alcatraz decided to shuffle around their
instrument assignments. Probably because Joel is always in at
least four bands, Tomo joined this one while songwriting for
most of Seattle, and Greg is on a perpetual journey find
instruments he can carry in a bag.
