│║ Description : ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ It's nice to look back on the bands you used to love some ║ │
│║ time ago. You are given a view of your younger self, or at ║ │
│║ least the person you were back then. Yet, I think that the ║ │
│║ best part of this kind of throwbacks is that you can listen ║ │
│║ to the material of one of your favorite bands with a more ║ │
│║ open mind, being more mature and less of a fanboy/fangirl ║ │
│║ yourself. That's the case with me and Sabaton. A couple of ║ │
│║ years ago, I used to think that they were one of the best ║ │
│║ bands out there, while I couldn't find anything wrong with ║ │
│║ their songs; just like you'd describe a typical fangirl. ║ │
│║ Now, while I still like them a lot, I think that I can ║ │
│║ listen to their music with a more critical approach. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ The music here, is, well, typical Sabaton. Mostly ║ │
│║ mid-paced, epic sounding songs that dwell in your brain and ║ │
│║ won't leave. However, there is a small yet noticeable ║ │
│║ difference from their other albums. The keyboards are quite ║ │
│║ toned-down, leaving more room for the guitars to shine. ║ │
│║ This is probably due to keyboardist Daniel Myhr's ║ │
│║ departure, along with the two guitarists and the drummer, ║ │
│║ but The Last Stand was probably the most keyboard-driven ║ │
│║ album in the band's career, so I might be wrong. ║ │
│║ Nevertheless, the result is a record full of catchy riffs. ║ │
│║ Special mention goes to the solos, which are quite more ║ │
│║ complex than usually, thanks to the -back then- new ║ │
│║ guitarists and especially Thobbe Englund, who is able to ║ │
│║ pull off some quite complex stuff. The combination of those ║ │
│║ and the epic sound creates some really motivating tracks, ║ │
│║ such as Night Witches or Far from the Fame, which make you ║ │
│║ want to shout the chorus till your neighbours call the ║ │
│║ police while you headbang/mosh to the galloping riffs and ║ │
│║ the solo. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ The band's lyrics have always been hit-or-miss. Many ║ │
│║ listeners appreciate the historical subjects adopted by the ║ │
│║ band, while others believe that they are rather generic and ║ │
│║ not really "historical". Normally, while I tend to agree ║ │
│║ with the first side, I think that the other one has got ║ │
│║ some points; at some songs, you could switch the lyrics and ║ │
│║ you wouldn't spot a differrence. To get to the fact, I ║ │
│║ believe that this album has the best lyrics written by ║ │
│║ Sabaton. The songs are all about personal stories, ║ │
│║ addressing the people's deeds instead of battles. They are ║ │
│║ mostly pretty well-written and emotional, especially No ║ │
│║ Bullets Fly and To Hell and Back, which are two of the best ║ │
│║ songs, not only because of the lyrical content, but also ║ │
│║ because of their melodic riffs and outstanding vocal work ║ │
│║ by BrodΘn. The latter gives a great performance, delivering ║ │
│║ the lines passionately with his usual gruff. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ However, as enjoyable as the album is, it has one major ║ │
│║ flaw, and that's self-plagiarism. Smoking Snakes is ║ │
│║ essentially Union at a faster speed, Hearts of Iron sounds ║ │
│║ way too much like a slower Uprising and No Bullets Fly's ║ │
│║ opening riff is an exercise on Killing Ground's one. There ║ │
│║ is very little attempt at experimentation, limited to a ║ │
│║ western intro in To Hell and Back and a ballad, which is ║ │
│║ obviously The Ballad of the Bull. One would expect that the ║ │
│║ new members would bring some kind of evolution to the ║ │
│║ Sabaton camp, some breeze of fresh air, but nothing of ║ │
│║ these happened. The main cause for this is apparently the ║ │
│║ almost complete dominance of Joakim BrodΘn and PΣr ║ │
│║ Sundstr÷m in the songwriting process. This isn't bad for ║ │
│║ everyone, but there have to be more active contributions ║ │
│║ from other members to keep the band from getting stale. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ In conclusion, Heroes is Sabaton's best album, musically ║ │
│║ and lyrically. Yet, ts flaws clearly depict what is wrong ║ │
│║ (if you count it as a mistake) with the direction the band ║ │
│║ has taken. I hope that the next album will be in the vein ║ │
│║ of this one, but with more experimentation. This will do ║ │
│║ good to both the band and the listeners. ║ │
