The New Gold Standard is the first compilation from the Fort Knox Recordings
label, a funk and breaks imprint set up by three years ago by the members of
Fort Knox Five (FK5). A collection of recent and not so recent singles, the
album certainly stays true to the labelÆs mission to ôspread the word with
fabulous party numbers û thinkàgangster chase themes and fat beats with live
instrumentation.ö
FK5 themselves are the major contributors to the compilation, providing six of
the fourteen numbers. The album gets started with a trio of their tracks: the
recent single Radio Free DC (featuring Afrika Bambaataa and King Kamonzi),
Blowing Up The Spot with its dulcet tones and laidback beats, and the hip
latinesque number Brazilian Hipster. Later inclusions are Once Again (featuring
Jah Kamonzi and some dub style breaks), funk thriller The Big Score, and the
groupÆs debut single, Dodge City Rockers.
Joining them in the early stages of the album are Rex Riddem and Speedy
Consuela. Rex Riddem is a long time collaborator of FK5, but this time he teams
up with Carlos Scorpiao in Brazil to record this samba influenced number. FK5
provide the final touches on this remix. In contrast to their name, Speedy
Consuela prefer a more laid back pace. First up is the ever so dreamy
Sundaydream, featuring swirling sound effects and sparkling female vocals. Sukka
Suited increases the pace somewhat, but only to the tempo of an indie pop song.
This more downbeat mood is picked up and developed on the latter tracks of the
compilation. International Velvet offers up a pair of tracks. Baby Shiva sees
the group joined by Mustafa Akbar and Roots of See-I on a mystical Indian
journey, while on Chariot (again featuring Mustafa Akbar) the feel is more so
one of funk. Finally, Liftoff contribute a trio of psychedelica infused tracks
to the album (Shine, Autumn and Kool It Man), with the hazy grooves of Kool It
Man bringing the album to a close.
The album has a real summery vibe to it, partially due to the strong latin
influence on many of the tracks (and who associates hot latin beats with
winter?) ItÆs the perfect soundtrack for a sunny afternoon BBQ or simply
chillinÆ at home. And itÆs all packaged up with one kick-arse cover that harkens
back to the early days of funk.
