PaganizerÆs ôCadaver Casket (On a Gurney to Hell)ö is an Old-School
Swedish Death Metal release with touches of tasty New York combat
riffage (the phrases in ôIt Came From the Graveyardö will get the heads
banging), which lets the listener know what to expect right away. æOn A
Gurney to HellÆ wastes no time by introducing us to the beloved guitar
tone that might be the most easily identifiable churn of all the
regional scenes. It is the same muscular and warm grind that first
reared its ugly head on the classic releases from Entombed and Dismember
(and all the rest you know and love) and changed the world. With
muscular vocals and varied percussion, Paganizer keeps their playing
tight and economical. The music is more than capable, and a brief and to
the point release by the veteran band sums up the appeal of the style.
In short, badass. But also more suited to the live environment and
without many surprises.
Like the awesome cover artwork (the figure facing us screams ôScream
Bloody Goreö), tracks like æRotÆ or æAfterlife BurnerÆ invoke the same
nightmare experiences that delight the worldÆs depraved and devoted
metalheads. Every one of the six cuts works well in this way, which will
keep the faithful comfortable in these familiar yet savage waters. Vinyl
only bonus track æDeranged WorldÆ ends up being the standout due to its
brevity and the outstanding intensity that boils over during the closing
break. A successful break is one that inspires one to break things
around them, or at the very least imagine other people breaking things.
A kind of moment that occurs at a live setting; that change of
atmosphere as a sizeable portion of the attendance devolves several
hundred thousand years and the rage becomes too much to hold in. We all
know those moments well.
Even as the revival of European protean death metal continues, a band
like Paganizer should be recognized for being a part of the second-wave
of the style, which separates them from their forbearers as well as the
myriad nostalgia fueled youth acts. This makes such an act a link
between the past and the present, an answer to why people like this
stuff. For someone out there OSDM never went out of fashion! Any fan of
the hallowed Old School would do service to themselves by picking this
one up.

A month without new album from Rogga Johansson is lostà but for this LP
I had to wait a little. This is the newest Paganizer EP, which
originally was added to (what a freaking idea!) Close-Up Magazine #157
(to subscribers only). I was afraid that I will have no chance to hear
it, when suddenly it turned out that there will be a vinyl version
released. And that is even better for me!!!!!! I certainly prefer such
music to be on vinyl! Surprisingly though, it is only my first Paganizer
12ö vinyl, I have many releases of this band, but all on CD and one or
two on 7ö. So, it was about time to get something on the best format
ever. Especially as ôCadaver Casketö comes with such an amazing artwork
(I seriously love it!) and on golden vinyl. Priceless.
Musically I seriously think this is one of the best Paganizer recordings
ever. And yes, I know what I am saying, IÆm not mad. The band has some
truly amazing albums in their discography, but if I can be honest there
are also some, which are more mediocre or kind of fillers to the whole
goregraphy. Anyway, most of their stuff is great, like the last two
albums. Anyway ôCadaver Casket (On a Gurney to Hell)ö surely belongs to
my favourite Paganizer materials. I just like everything about it. The
band fires off with a killer title song and ever since the first note I
am into this shit! ôCadaver Casketö has a classic, meaty, brutal,
powerful sound, where every riff sounds like damn chainsaw and each drum
sound is like a blast. And RoggaÆs vocals are û as always û extremely
good. And when they kick off with the blasts in ôRotö then the madness
is in the peak! What I love here also is that Paganizer incorporates
some harmonic parts, like killer leads and stuff like that, what makes
the whole music not only more interesting, but also just more varied and
it is just touching the essence of the classic Swedish death metal, with
the dark, eerie atmosphere and memorable, possessing riff. Rogga is a
never-ending mine for the killer riffs, what such ôSouls for Saleö
proves again. IÆm not gonna mention any more songs though. For me
ôCadaver Casketö is close to perfection, speaking of this style of
music! And I really donÆt give a shit if someone will moan that it is
repetitive and has been played hundreds of times before. This is not
what it all is about, at least not for me. I do take a lot of joy and
passion from bands like Paganizer and yes, I can certainly consider
ôCadaver Casketö to be one of the best Swedish death metal tunes, which
I have heard lately. Enough said!
