On Martya Xwar, Poland's Saratan (Arabic for "cancer") try to blend some
Middle East influences with their standard death/thrash sound. Their
success rate isn't particularly high as the exotic strings and
percussion are used mainly as intros/outros and are distinctly separate
from the songs they begin/end. Exceptions to this would be "The Sacred
Path of Martya Xwar" which has a great atmosphere, one that makes you
feel like you are walking through the seedier section of the local souk,
and "Asmodea," where the guitar plays a Middle East-influence melody
that blends well with the rest of the song. The rest of Martya Xwar is
well played but dull due, in no small part, to the vocals, which are a
monotonous yell. Because of this one song on Martya Xwar sounds a lot
like every other song.
Saratan can play and Martya Xwar sounds terrific, but Melechesh have set
the standard for Middle East-influenced Heavy Metal. Saratan still have
a ways to go.
