│║ No time to pick up the pieces of your skull! Sword are back ║ │

│║ "Sweet dreams" (misspelt as "Sweat dreams" on the actual ║ │
│║ CD), I guess, is the natural progression from the ║ │
│║ extraordinary "Metalized". It's a bit longer, more matured, ║ │
│║ and a slightly more "accessible" album than the debut, ║ │
│║ meaning the production is a bit rounder around the edges. ║ │
│║ Otherwise, it's more of the same - hi-octane traditional ║ │
│║ metal, occasionally exploring the speed metal realm. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Now look! I don't hand out top ratings lightly, nor am I ║ │
│║ easily impressed by cheap rock hooks. I hate glam, AOR, ║ │
│║ cock rock, or whatever you like to call it. When I say that ║ │
│║ this album is sort of accessible, I mean that these guys ║ │
│║ show a great awareness of melody in both vocal lines, leads ║ │
│║ and even riffs - but they never actually compromise with ║ │
│║ the energy of the performance. The band has not forgotten ║ │
│║ what made them great in the first place. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Even so, the album starts out a bit slowly, with three ║ │
│║ mid-tempo numbers. All very strong, mind you, but when the ║ │
│║ third one has run for a while, you begin to wonder what is ║ │
│║ going on. Then, of course, they remember that they're the ║ │
│║ coolest band in the world, and explodes on "Back off". The ║ │
│║ album never looks back after that. Really, if you don't ║ │
│║ thrash around the room to "State of shock", "Prepare to ║ │
│║ die" or "Caught in the act", you have to be in a ║ │
│║ wheelchair. And even that is no excuse not to make an ass ║ │
│║ of yourself. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ "Air masturbation is underrated" - Confucius ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Again, not a single remotely weak track. The top numbers ║ │
│║ here are every bit as good as the finest on "Metalized". ║ │
│║ "State of shock" is this album's "Outta control". A ║ │
│║ tremendous adrenaline kick, ending the album on a high note ║ │
│║ equal to three measures of coffee per cup. Outstanding. The ║ │
│║ weaker half of this album is not QUITE as impressive as on ║ │
│║ the debut, hence the slightly lower rating, but 90% still ║ │
│║ means it's the cream of the crop. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Apart from the somewhat slow start, the album is just as ║ │
│║ dynamic tempo-wise as the debut, despite the same ║ │
│║ no-nonsene approach to the songwriting. You never have to ║ │
│║ worry that the songs blend into each other in their ║ │
│║ relative simplicity, because each one is so memorable! ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Still no ballads in sight, and why should there be? The ║ │
│║ band knows full well that life is too short not to play ║ │
│║ riffs all the time. This is really the band's mission ║ │
│║ statement: Be all that you can be, play riffs all the time. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Hughes is all over the place again. He gives his all even ║ │
│║ in the slower, more "mature" numbers, like the first three ║ │
│║ songs, and just dominates the rocking tracks like there's ║ │
│║ no tomorrow. His voice is so complete and confident, even ║ │
│║ the high-pitched screams fill out the speakers with a ║ │
│║ thunderous bottom end. Seriously, listen to "Life on the ║ │
│║ sharp edge" and tell me this guy shouldn't have a brilliant ║ │
│║ career. Just like on "Metalized", a perfect interplay ║ │
│║ between the vocals and guitar melodies, both complementing ║ │
│║ each other to greater heights. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ The lyrics on this album seem to be more serious, of a ║ │
│║ socio-political nature, or something. Don't think I've ever ║ │
│║ read them. Really, I don't care about your opinions on war, ║ │
│║ criminality, and whatever other important-ass issues you ║ │
│║ can conjure up, so long as you ROCK, hmm? ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ And that's all they do. I love this band, and it saddens my ║ │
│║ heart to see filthy junkies like M÷tley Crue become rich ║ │
│║ and famous, while guys like Sword, who were ALL about the ║ │
│║ music, are left forgotten and buried. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Fuck glam, fuck poodle rock, fuck arena drums, fuck all the ║ │
│║ hair bands in the world. They have nothing on these guys. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ This is true heavy metal from the heart. No image, just ║ │
│║ conquest. ║ │
│║ ║ │
