│║ CHURCH OF THE HOLY GHOST is the 1999 debut album of the ║ │
│║ Italian power metal combo ARTHEMIS, which has been doing ║ │
│║ mischief since 1994 (at that time under the name NEMHESIS). ║ │
│║ From this time there doesn't seem to be much left - ║ │
│║ especially since the band only became known and more ║ │
│║ successful when Alessio Garavello, who later became known ║ │
│║ as POWER QUEST front man, took over the position of lead ║ │
│║ singer. Interestingly, this only happened shortly after the ║ │
│║ present CHURCH OF THE HOLY GHOST - so that here you can get ║ │
│║ by far the most original and roughest ARTHEMIS material ║ │
│║ still available today. And that is exactly what you should ║ │
│║ be prepared for or not count on an overly sophisticated ║ │
│║ sounding musical outpouring. After all, the album was ║ │
│║ released as a purely independent production at the time, ║ │
│║ and the members apparently did not have the best options in ║ │
│║ terms of recording, mixing and production. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ If you can ignore this - and possibly still get used to the ║ │
│║ lead vocals of Alberto Caria - you can still discover a ║ │
│║ very interesting genre album. And that is perhaps even an ║ │
│║ understatement, because: the compositions offered here do ║ │
│║ not sound like typical power clichΘs of the Italian brand. ║ │
│║ Rather, CHURCH OF THE HOLY GHOST presents an astonishingly ║ │
│║ classic genre sound that, with its emphasized bass and ║ │
│║ enormously progressive structures, is a pleasant reminder ║ │
│║ of a bygone era of heavy metal. And it is precisely this ║ │
│║ surprisingly classic genre sound that, despite the clear ║ │
│║ weaknesses in terms of presentation, can easily carry the ║ │
│║ album. In other words: once you have found your way in the ║ │
│║ context of the album and got used to the sound, nothing ║ │
│║ stands in the way of classic metal pleasure. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ This is also due to the overall excellent guitar work ║ │
│║ including numerous appealing instrumental tracks and solos, ║ │
│║ the lead singer Alberto Caria, who feels more and more ║ │
│║ certain during the course of the album; as well as the ║ │
│║ generally quite energetic to furious overall effect of ║ │
│║ crushers aÆla WAR or TYRANTS TIME. But the overall ║ │
│║ entertainment value is then even increased. Be it the ║ │
│║ shortest title on the album (TIME TO REACT) with its ║ │
│║ convincing changes in tempo, the relaxed but iconic ║ │
│║ TOMORROW'S WORLD, the slightly crazy CLAWS OF THE DEVIL - ║ │
│║ ARTHEMIS have delivered a lot here, with each individual ║ │
│║ instrument performing excellently and with the greatest ║ │
│║ possible flexibility acts. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ In any case, everyone involved deserves respect: the ║ │
│║ extremely variable, lively drumming by Alessio Turrini ║ │
│║ inspires, the bass by Matteo Galbier never goes under, the ║ │
│║ staged spectacle by guitarists Andrea Martongelli and ║ │
│║ Matteo Ballottari is a highlight in itself - and lead ║ │
│║ singer Alberto Caria ultimately convinces, not least thanks ║ │
│║ to its safety in the high altitudes. It is a pity, of ║ │
│║ course, that the album can never fully develop its ║ │
│║ potentially extremely high-profile effect. In other words: ║ │
│║ the sound impression, which is more reminiscent of a clumsy ║ │
│║ garage production, hardly does justice to the actual size ║ │
│║ of CHURCH OF THE HOLY GHOST - and, in combination with the ║ │
│║ not always optimal lead vocals, prevents the album from ║ │
│║ rising to the absolute Olympic level. With a recommendation ║ │
│║ and one of the more interesting Italy releases, however, it ║ │
│║ remains. ║ │
