▌░ ░▐
▌░ This may be the best progressive rock album virtually no one ░▐
▌░ has heard of! ░▐
▌░ ░▐
▌░ Omega is Hungary's most successful band, wildly popular ░▐
▌░ there, with a body of work dating from the late 1960s (the ░▐
▌░ Communist authorities actually tolerated them). Initially ░▐
▌░ recording exclusively in their own language, they began to ░▐
▌░ release material in English on the German Bellaphon label in ░▐
▌░ the early 1970s. Much of this was progressive hard rock in a ░▐
▌░ Yes or ELP mode, but with abundant hints of the Beatles and ░▐
▌░ the Stones (lead singer Janos Kobor's style occasionally ░▐
▌░ reminds me of Mick Jagger's). ░▐
▌░ ░▐
▌░ The group's trajectory took them into spacier material that ░▐
▌░ culminated in Gammapolis. Originally released in 1978, ░▐
▌░ Gammapolis was the second of three English-language LPs (the ░▐
▌░ first was Skyrover, the third was entitled Working), even if ░▐
▌░ it was actually the group's ninth release. The fact that ░▐
▌░ Omega never received an ounce of promotion nor a minute of ░▐
▌░ airplay (that I know of) anywhere in the English-speaking ░▐
▌░ world is one of the great injustices in the history of rock ░▐
▌░ music. For these tracks, in whichever language, easily recall ░▐
▌░ the best of the Moodies, Genesis, or other progressive rock ░▐
▌░ stalwarts, although with a distinct Eastern European edge and ░▐
▌░ Kobor's powerful, out-in-front vocals that were the group's ░▐
▌░ trademark. I cannot help but think Omega could have been ░▐
▌░ much, much bigger if anyone on the other side of the Atlantic ░▐
▌░ had ever gotten to hear them. ░▐
▌░ ░▐
▌░ This welcome reissue (remastered) contains eight tracks sung ░▐
▌░ in Hungarian & six of the eight tracks that appeared on the ░▐
▌░ English version. It's clear this was the group's most ░▐
▌░ accessible release, the production polished. The hard edge of ░▐
▌░ earlier material is gone, except for "Rush Hour" (& its ░▐
▌░ Hungarian equivalent); the guitar plays languidly against the ░▐
▌░ background formed by Laszlo Benko's keyboards (piano, organ, ░▐
▌░ synth, occasional Mellotron). The overall mood is relaxed, ░▐
▌░ with a certain amount of wistfulness, even melancholy. I am ░▐
▌░ led to believe that the Gammapolis of the title track, in two ░▐
▌░ parts, is either an off-world space colony of some sort or a ░▐
▌░ colony on another world, an imagined place of refuge from ░▐
▌░ this world. Since I do not read Hungarian, that's a bit ░▐
▌░ difficult to judge, but the English tracks bespeak of rising ░▐
▌░ hopes ("Dawn in the City") dashed in the frenetic rush and ░▐
▌░ alienating coldness of city life ("Rush Hour") or dealings ░▐
▌░ with its denizens ("The Man Without a Face"), followed by ░▐
▌░ escape into a daydream ("Lady of the Summer Night"), ░▐
▌░ awakening to lost hopes ("Silver Rain"), and the desire just ░▐
▌░ to get away ("Gammapolis"). ░▐
