| Walking Down Rainhill is JakeÆs latest effort, marking his third solo |
| album and centers on his original pieces. The album and is produced once |
| again by Dr. Trey. The recording took place at Dr. TreyÆs recording |
| studio in Hawaii, except for a few ukulele parts that were recorded in |
| the bathrooms of the hotels he stayed at during his many promotional |
| trips to Japan while in the midst of working on his new album. According |
| to Dr. Trey, the natural echoes provided by the bathrooms worked to give |
| it an exquisite touch. ItÆs a rock-oriented album that brings the |
| ukulele together with other instruments to create an array of songs, |
| from mellow numbers to Surf Rock and West Coast Rock type tracks. The |
| leading number ôHeartbeatö is a conceptual piece - a monumental |
| undertaking divided into several sections. Condensed within this song |
| that opens with an illusionary reverberation of the ukulele and ascends |
| to a dramatic climax are elements of classical, rock and traditional |
| ukulele music. The album displays a wondrous array of new challenges |
| embraced joyously by Jake, the result of his natural sense of curiosity. |
| The two covers songs on this album are the classic, ôWhile My Guitar |
| Gently Weepsö by George Harrison, an artist Jake holds in the highest |
| regard, and ôHikaru Kaigaraö, a song Masayoshi Yamazaki wrote for |
| Chitose HajimeÆs album Hainumikaze. ôWhile My Guitar Gently Weepsö is a |
| track Jake plays from time to time at his shows. ôSomethingö is another |
| one of HarrisonÆs songs that he played for the Japanese audience last |
| year. It seems that George Harrison, the Beatle that had a special love |
| for the ukulele, is a great source of motivation for Jake in the |
| development of his musical career. As for the latter, Haimumikaze was a |
| CD Jake bought on one of his trips to Japan. Drawn to Chitose HajimeÆs |
| unique vocal style and sound production he felt a strong urge to cover |
| the song. He has also mentioned the sense of great empathy he felt for |
| the songwriter Masayoshi YamazakiÆs style of emoting through the guitar |
| and harmonica. The album title Walking Down Rainhill is a reference to |
| the rain that often sweeps over Hawaii. The title track is a sentimental |
| number that incorporates the sound of rain and distant thunder into the |
| song. |
